Next year as the onions bulge from the ground they will be covered with mulch. I notice the tops stay green longer, hence possibly larger bulbs. As to exposing to Sun to reduce the sting, I have drawn no conclusions, and will pursue the matter no further.

I'm on my third batch of onions now; I've harvested 2 batches. I've never heard of covering onion tops with mulch but may try that on the batch that is in the ground now.

How do you store your onions? Have you ever woven the tops of your onions to form a braid? I've done that and at other times I store them in the pantry in a net bag.

I simply place the onions in an open container or an open woven sack in the coolest part of the house, and they keep quite well, provided they are well dried. I have never woven them, since I have so few, also by cutting off the stems drying is probably more evident. Besides I am probably too lazy.

I might add; the mulch is good practice, but keep the roots slightly damp. The mulch prevents the roots from drying since they are almost exposed out of the ground in the latter stages of growth. My reasoning.
