Hi all - I'm gathering Bloodflower seeds at the moment, so if anyone would like some, please let me know. The bloodflower is a milkweed and produces the pods that monarch butterflies feed on and that makes them poisonous. How fun! Not that any monarch butterflies showed up to feed on mine this year. . . I suppose you need the flowers to be at the right stage when in the migration comes through your area. But the flowers do attract butterflies of all types. Here is a picture of it in bloom . . .

Wow!! Thank you strawgirl, you just answered a question I had - I'd ordered some milkweed plants this year and have been puzzling over what kind they were.
I'm used to the orange or pinkish ones, and mine look exactly like your picture!! So they are bloodflower milkweed, now I know. They sure are pretty.

I have seen some monarch larvae on my milkweed, but no chrysalis and no butterflies. We do have a LOT of different swallowtail butterflies here; they ate ALL my parsley and two milkweed plants this Summer. Of course, the plants come right back.
I do miss the monarchs, though.

That one is very pretty, Sunmad. The native milkweed here is pinkish-purple. I can save seed if anyone wants it.
