hi,
this is my first year trying to grow melons. I tried starting Golden Jenny indoors in April, which worked out great. I also have Schoons Hardshell, Prescott Fond Blanc, and Collective Farm Woman that I direct-seeded in the garden.

Since I planted the Golden Jenny indoors, obviously they are at this time the largest. There are at least a dozen softball sized melons out there. The seed description said they should grow to 2 pounds, seems they are getting close to that, as I weighed a standard sized lope at the grocery store the other day and it was over 3 pounds.

I was just wondering if anyone has grown this variety, how big they are supposed to be at harvest time, and when I will know they are ready to pick.

Thanks in advance,
Miller.

Hi, I have not tried growing Golden Jenny yet, I did start Prescott Fond Blank out side near the beginning of June as all the vines look a bit sick from meldew they may not make it. but we will see How are yours doing? This is the first time I have tried to grow this variety along with some others.

George,
The mildew thing's got me a bit irritated, also. Seems I have to sprinkle to get moisture down fast enough in this heat, but then the mildew problem kicks in. Doesn't help a bit that I used similar spacings (here in the Ozarks) to what I used to use in New Mexico, but the plants seem to get a LOT bigger here. Could thin 'em, prolly should, but gosh I so hate to do that.....

hi,
my Prescotts seem ok, I have 2 plants. I inspected closely to look for the symptoms you had, they may be a little dry, it's been so hot here in the Northeast, but no mildew.

As for the indoor growing of melons, I'm sure I read somewhere you could start them indoors. It was my first year trying melons, so I gave it a shot. I started 5 Golden Jenny plants in 4 inch pots, and they shot right out of the gate, the vines were a good foot long when I hardened them off for a week and then transplanted them outside. They looked a little weak at first, maybe a little transplant shock, but they are going crazy now. So whether I read it somwhere or not, you can start them earlier indoors, I'm living proof, hehe.
