roselle...started in Dec. Since they take a long season to grow I started them way early.

It's getting crowded in here. I'm out of space and hope to get these out to the lean-to by at very lastest by 2nd. week of Feb.then get my tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and herbs started.

Inspiring, GrannieB! Keep up with the pics! And have you grown roselle before? (are those ones with the white spots on the leaves the roselle?)

No I've never grown the roselle before. It's the ones in front of the spotted(begonia"My Special Angel")plant....closest to the camera.

Okay, so those are roselle ... :o I thought I'd seen that spotted one before; called something like Dragon's Wing or something, sometimes, aren't they?

I've got a bunch of bottles of concentrate I bought at our "food outlet store" of Hibiscus drink called "Jamaica," which is really good, red and fruity and just a little spicy. Made from roselle.

Your pics are really inspiring to me. I have a little space and some fluorescent lights ... almost time to start up some peppers. Because of Blood Type Diet (which we all love here), I, Blood Type O, am the only person amongst the lot of us who can/should eat tomatoes! So the emphasis is OFF of tomatoes. That used to be the biggest vegetable for starting early, for me. So ... what do you do with your little cabbage plants? When do you transplant them into the garden? I think I'm going to try actually growing michihili, and maybe even plant some brussels sprouts at the right time so they'll make sprouts before it gets too hot ...

Yes,dragon or angel wing begonias

My hub's is diabetic so I'm trying to grow more varieties of green foods for us.

My light set-up is two old sewing machine cabinets w/ an old kitchen cabinet door on top of those, heat mat and one dbl tube grow light fixture. Wished I had a bigger area but you use what you have.

I have started now: Long Island Improved brussel sprouts,Red stem choy sum,Early Jersery cabbage,
Rainbow Mix swiss chard,Violetta pok choy,Green Macerata cauliflower and Violetta Italia cauliflower. Eat what we can and sell the rest.

Only problem I'm having with them is the darn peat pots dry out so quick on the heat mat. I was going to start my tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and herbs in them next month but I'm having second thought about that and may just do each variety in community pots then potted them up as they grow.Where I'll go with them as I pot them up is another dilemma. My new room addition has one whole wall(25 ft)of windows that are almost floor to ceiling so there's plenty of light but it's heated w/ wood burning stove so keeping heat regulated, especially at night might slow them down.

I've been wanting to try the roselle a couple of years now. A friend sent me some seeds.

You should have a Macro function on your digital camera (the icon looks like a single flower) Turn on the macro function and you can get in as close as you want and get clear pictures.:D

GrannieB, try putting your peat pots in one of those shallow , aluminum turkey roater pans that the stores sell. You can put a small amount of water in them to keep the pots damp all the time. I have that dry-out problem in my large greenhouse's upper shelves where it can get hot during the day. I have the pots in those containers and just water the containers. Strong

They are in water tight trays it just the heat mat dries the peat pots out so quick. They all have sprouted so well now that I have un-plugged the mat so they can start getting use to cooler temps and I can move them out to the lean-to soon.

Ohio,
I have that setting ...I don't remember if that's what I had it set on.
