I am all for healthy eating but the government should not regulate what I can or can't eat. If I want to eat fried and fatty foods and clog my arteries then I should have the freedom to do that.

I say instead of banning it, use the same approach many European countries use with GM foods... enforce labelling it on everything, including menus. That way it's people can decide if it's too much for them.
Although I am all for regulating large food companies, I am not for taking away the right to deciside freely from the individual citizen.
This idea of banning a food just reminds me of the movie Demolition Man where there was a whole list of foods banned because they were considered unhealthy. The movie had some other nuggets of prophecy as well... Schwarzenegger Presidential Library" (and the movie came out long before he became Govenor).

You know I was thinking that exact same thing. I remember Edgar Friendly's little speach in the underground about chili cheese fries too.

All too true. Unfortunately, quite a few somebodies had to approve the somebodies who are taking away our righ to think for ourselves in the name of safety (and security...) Those first somebodies need to think before they vote...

It's not too bad to eat one or two once in a long while, but an everyday thing will kill you in no time. The last time I had a doughnut was about 3 or 4 years ago and I don't miss it.

I'm with you Helen Wong-Joe. I don't like sweets. Grease is something different altogather. <grin>
But this is supposed to be a free country. If I eat fourty eleven a day, it's my business.

Drinking alcohol is legal ... drinking too much is illegal.
Driving a car is legal ... driving too fast is illegal.
Drinking alcohol then driving is legal unless you test "over the limit" or in some jurisdictions, drive with an open container in the car.
Smoking tobacco is legal ... smoking in certain public venues is illegal.
Using a cell phone is legal ... using a cell phone while driving is illegal in certain jurisdictions.
Open burning is legal ... in some jurisdictions open burning requires a permit ... in other jurisdictions, open burning is banned.
Are you seeing a pattern?
Most of the smoking ban advocates use "protect the children" from seeing adults smoking or setting a bad example as one of their major points ... just like many of the advocates of barroom separation from "family room" facilities say it's because children shouldn't see liquor dispensed to adults, etc.
Most of these laws that protect us from ourselves and limit the consumption of otherwise legal substances are based on emotional arguments to support puritan agendas.
And that's where this anti-fat campaign is comin' from. Saturated fat and trans fats are deadly. Make no mistake about that. Yeah, maybe in the days when everyone worked like a mule and there was no such thing as air conditioning and central heat and our entire lives weren't climate controlled and everyone walked or rode a horse rather than sittin' of their fat, lazy arses ... then maybe we used to burn off all that saturated fat.
But nowadays, it just collects in our arteries and kills us.
Sure, it's our choice. I agree completely. And it's our choice whether we smoke our lungs into asphalt pavement or drink our livers into doorstops. About 20 years ago, when I stopped smokin' tobacco the first time, I told my wife the day would come when they'd ban smokin' on public streets. She said "never."
Well, I'm tellin' y'all right now ... the day will come when trans fats will be outlawed. The only reason they ever were produced in the first place was 'cause it's cheaper to use'm and saves the food corporations money.
A lot of y'all are opposed to genetic modification of food crops. Why not resist all this harmful modification of food products like hydrogenated vegetable oil and high fructose corn syrup? This stuff isn't any more natural than GMOs and is killing our kids.
Hold on a minute ... I just turned into a gall-darned Puritan nitwit!

When you get really upset, beside yourself and frustrated beyond belief you should indulge in a doughnut and don't think twice about it!

I love jelly doughnuts....but since I don't deepfat fry, and don't live in a place where they have them locally (have to go to city for bakery fresh ones) I guess arteries are safe from them. But I do miss bakery fresh jelly doughnuts, especially lemon or raspberry ones.
Even when I lived in a city, it was a long walk to get them. Maybe that's why they seem such treats.

WaitaminuteWaitaminuteWaitaminute ... did you see the "real news" in the article? Trans fat has been pulled out of DORITOS (which, of course, is God's gift to us as the ultimate snack food :) ). Now, if we can only get them to pull MSG from the recipe, then ... maybe ... my wife will let me eat them, again!
BTW, I know we should avoid all of the hydrogenated oils and high-fructose sugars ... and I do, for the most part ... but, a fresh, Krispy Kreme, glazed doughnut ... OK ... SIX fresh, Krispy Kreme, glazed doughnuts and a tall glass of milk give you a feeling of contentment that is impossible to duplicate. :D
