Has anybody grown giant walking stick kale? My friend got a packet and tried to grow them this spring but they didn't do anything. We were going to try again this fall. We live in North Alabama and have pretty mild winters. Anybody with experience?
Thanks
Steph

Mine did nothing here as a spring planted crop. Winters are rough here so overwintering is unlikely.

That could have been due to the drought. I have grown kale successfully for years, but haven't tried the giant walking stick. I see no reason you could not grow it if the conditions were right.

Thompson and Morgan used to always carry it. Not sure if they still do.

Thought I would pass on my experience on growing kale...
It is a cool weather crop and a good time to plant would be about 12-14 weeks before your 1st expected frost in the fall.
I live in Maine zone 4-5 and we grow ornamental kale thousands of them about June.

Now I know why its called walking stick. Was always curious since I saw it mentioned in the kids gardening book that I have.

Walking stick kale is very hardy and can be harvested even when there's snow on the ground.

When you folks say it "did nothing", what do you mean? Did it germinate? Under what conditions? Did you keep it watered and tended?

i couldn't get my thompson and morgan seed to germ this past year.... but i will admit they weren't in ideal conditions.
I hope to try it again this season.... if i don't have to go out of my way to find some.
...just checked out Nichols .... they seem to have more on their website than in their catalog. Looks like i'll be trying walknigs stick kale again :p
does anybody have any tips on these plants? looks like farmers market potential to me :D
