I'm growing rosemary, sage, thyme, and basil, and I will be bringing them all in for the winter. Depending on how sheltered they are the sage and thyme (and probably the lavender) should be fine. I bring mine in because they are in pots and windowboxes instead of in the ground.

Oregano, sage, thyme and chives should overwinter outside just fine. The lavender to me is suspect (depends on the variety of course, but the English lavender won't survive a regular cold Missouri winter, I believe.) And the rosemary and bay should be brought in or protected somehow.

I can tell you what would (and would not) overwinter in my garden in Terre Haute, IN -about equilateral with St. Loius, MO, a very cold zone 6 or very warm zone 5.

garlic and onion chives, rosemary, bay, lavenders, sages, balsam, thyme, oreganos

No problem overwintering Garlic, also Chives (both will re-sprout in the spring). Mulch if you want to be on the safe side, straw works well. Onions didn't overwinter in the ground bare (but I think might have with a heavy straw mulch. Same with potatoes.) Rosemary and Bay are tender. Pineapple sage is tender, but my "regular"-culinary- sage overwintered fine. Oddly, on my south-side location, lavender, too, overwintered, although I don't think it was supposed to! Didn't have thyme or oregano.

Hope this helps!

I live a short distance from Terre Haute; everything but rosemary and bay should survive just fine.

Most of these herbs can be left out. Pot up rosemary and bring in. I dont know about balsam. I livein kentucky z 6 and have over 40 types of herbs. I never had any luck with rosemary akways buy new each year.

--Randel I never had any luck with lavender until i mix sand into my soil, which allow for good drainage. i live in kentucky Z6. My lavender have over winter twice since i mix sand with soil.

I don't have any place for my herbs inside. This is what I do. I build a little plastic tent around all my herbs in pots. I stake the plastic down so the wind cannot blow it off. I leave one end open a little so I can ventilate the tent if needed. On really cold nights like we are having now I put a gallon jug of relly hot water in the center of the herbs and cover with a heavy blanket. In the morning if it is still freezing I reheat water and add it to the bed. I collect rain water in a large bucket and water them when needed.

My lavender did fine last winter, I also mixed sand and rocks into the soil when I planted it. I would definitely bring in the bay and protect or bring in the rosemary.

What is your hardy zone?
I'm zone 5b-6a. I don't know what balsam is but all the other's except Bay and Rosemary are hardy here. English Lavender's, Lavender x intermedia 'Grosso' and Thyme are evergreen here; the Salvia semi-evergreen. Chives and Garlic Chives die down but will come back in spring. I don't have Oregano but my neighbors does and it's back ever year.
These were all taken early to mid June....
