I hope I did this right, my first year growing garlic. I bought it at the grocery store and planted. Will that work?

Nichols Garden Nursery and Territorial still has some. Their web addresses are www.nicholsgardennursery.com, territorialseed.com.

Joan,
Supermarket garlic has worked OK for me whenever I've tried it. You won't know the name of your variety of course. Last year I tried this with shallots and it did NOT work. I was digging bulbs up until the following spring (meaning this year's spring) watching eagerly for signs of growth. Never a root did I see. Apparently growth-inhibiting agents are used on onion-family supermarket stock. I would say that if your garlic is gonna grow, you would probably see shoots within around 3-5 weeks.

P planted scallions and garlic near each other. Now I have to figure out which green shoots are sticking out! Thanks. I will order them next year.

Try www.filareefarm.com
They have organic seed and food garlic. . .unless they are so behind their website isn't updated. Loads of varieties.
Hope that helps.

I think I might just have the solution to the world's problems!! turn it all over to gardeners to figure out. since mentioning finding garlic on this, and one other forum, i have been sent just about any kind of garlic a person could want. i hope in a few years, i can repay this by helping others. the only kind i had to order was elephant garlic (which i'm told is not a true garlic) and i'm sure if i had asked, someone could have supplied it. the garlic bed is in--and sprouting!!

Hmmmm, that's an idea Joan....if I do I'd have to use supermarket garlic, there isn't anyone nearby selling garlic to plant and it would take too long to get it if I order...... On the other hand, a friend who raises free range and grass fed livestock and chickens but doesn't garden has just offered me all the manure/bedding materials I could ever want......

What to do, what to do

In our area (Ozarks) October/November is the perfect time. Most places about the same I should think...maybe a bit later in really warm country like the hot area of the Southwest etc.

Well, we are having the most bazaar weather!
tonight we might see snow or sleet--momentarily. Fog so bad because the ground still very warm. But I'm oh so excited cause next week will be the perfect temps for planting garlic and shallots. So my new assortment of 10 varieties of garlic (assortment of silverskin, glazed purple stripe, creole, and turban) and the lost and now found Red Sun shallots will find new nests next week at our new place. Gardening. . .always such an adventure!

Who would ever think of harvesting tomatoes the last week before December and planting garlic in borderline zone 6 in Dec. Always something new going on in our garden.

has anyone read the book "Growing Great Garlic"? What do you think? Was it helpful?
have fun growing garlic in your grand garden!

What I've noted is the garlic I planted in October is doing SO much better than what I got planted the end of November here.....it IS poking it's head above ground, but no leaves yet....It has been SO cold and wet though this year.
