California soil prep

Hi! I live in southern California below the 34th parallel. This last year we built a retaining wall with a lot of fill dirt - a clay base with some organic material in it. I want to prepare the soil for growing ... maybe ... tomatoes, squash, peppers, onions. I've always had a garden of some sort but this is the first time I've thought about the soil BEFORE I put the garden in! :p Any help you can give you be greatly appreciated.
