View Full Version : Too much of a good thing?

So, I'm sitting at the kitchen table enjoying my third ripe tomato with a bit of olive oil, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a healthy shake of cajun seasoning (yep camo, it IS sublime). And I'm thinking, I wonder just how many tomatoes is too many? Which got me thinking...with all the yummy things getting picked out of gardens these days, are there any veggies or fruits in particular that one should be aware will cause a "too much of a good thing" reaction if one...um... over-indulges?

Now folks, we are excluding beans in this thread for obvious reasons! :D :p

Well, I know if you drink too much OJ or too much carrot juice you will turn yourself yellow  is that the sort of thing you meant?

Hi,
My name is V. and I'm a tomato addict.:D

In the summer time, on average, I will eat at least 5 big tomatoes a day. That does not include the cherry tomatoes that never even make it in the house.

I eat them instead of meals, which probably isn't the greatest thing. Since tomatoes are only really good when freshly picked in the summer, I eat to my hearts content. Good thing I don't have stomach issues.

I hope it's not a bad thing eating lots of tomatoes because I'd be in big trouble.

Parsnips contain appreciable amounts of photoactive, mutagenic, and photocarcinogenic psoralens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psoralen). Celery too in lesser quantities.

I still eat them, but not nearly as much as I would if I they didn't have it. I also make a point not selecting roots with any damage (psoralen content increases with plant damage and stress) and I peel them as this appears to reduce the quantity significantly.

Then there are the vegetables that are high in oxalic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalic_acid) like spinach and amaranth. Over consumption can interfere with calcium uptake and it's usually recommended that people with kidney disorders, gout or rheumatoid arthritis avoid them.

Oh and on a lighter note. Large quantities of dark red beets are always fun to feed people who don't normally eat them and aren't aware of the colorful side effects.

Neeld, that's funny about the beets! And good to know about the celery.

V - I can think of worse things to have for meals. In fact, I think that tomatoes and blueberries are both considered super-foods for their nutrients, anti-oxidents, and other such things that nutritionists talk about. Add some olive oil (also good for you) and you are in even better shape!

I am mainly wondering like Neeld posted if there were foods out there that either weren't good for you in multiple helpings or multiple times a day, or things that in folks' experience simply caused uncomfortable reactions! :D

In the beginning of the season, tomatoes do me in! but I keep eating them anyway and my body seems to adjust. :)

I think everyone that grows them is well versed in the effects of over indulging in HOT peppers!

you can never have too much of anything out of the garden...[except bugs..lol]
all that produce was grown with love,
kissed by sunlight,
bathed in rain,
and dried by the wind....
how could it be anything but good for you?
