View Full Version : German Red Strawberry tomato

Has anyone had experience with German Red Strawberry tomatoes? Do they produce well? For reference, I live in Missouri's bootheel. I tried to plant brandywines in my garden this past year :( . They did terrible! But my roma and amish paste did great!! Any advice?

I grew GRS last summer and a few summers ago, in humid zone 7a Maryland. The fruits are huge, very dense (and therefore HEAVY), and they taste absolutely delicious. GRS isn't a very prolific producer for me, though. From what I understand, this is true of most of the oxheart/strawberry types. I intend to keep growing it, though, because of the flavor.

we grew them in our unheated commercial size greenhouse in wisconsin last season. most weighed about one pound. very meaty very few seeds and we thought a medium tomato flavor. a new favorite with our farm market customers as there is little waste from too much water in these fruits. they ripened alittle later in the season but were an excellent producer.we will most definitly grow again this year.

I'll give it a thumbs-up also.It was a good producer for me last season and pretty tasty to boot.Worth a spot in the garden next year for me too. :)

BlackBearry,....i jus joined this forum, but i have 2 years under the belt of growin a GRSB....in the South. A GRSB will trick one, when first growin it. It grows very spindly, when young, the term used by most...is..." whispy foilage". It seems to droop, have no spine to it. As it matures, it's mid to lower sections stiffen, but it's uppermost foilage...ALWAYS, retains this unique droopiness. If you study, u will find that this is a common trait, in heart-shaped tomatos.

A GRSB is NOT a great yielder...but it's not a poor yielder, either. In any event,....it's taste an texture are worthy of Any efforts expended by the grower,....it tastes Heavenly, and it's texture is so meaty, chewy. A GRSB is not a foilage-enhanced plant. It is rather sparse with it's foilage. This is another reason that first-time growers balk at it's appearance.

and there's another important thing to know about a GRSB. It has the longest time to Maturation, of any tomato i know of. It needs a very long season, or a early , protected start, to get on its feet an get runnin. This time will make one drool, in expectation, of fulfillment...)))

I'm hopin to try a similar heart-shape....i think they call it Russian 117....but a GRSB is a beautiful, taste-orgie fruit, that one will appreciate, after all the surprises, wonders about it...)))
