View Full Version : Baker Creek Grabbin' Attention Over "There"

Hey, Folks ...
Jere and gang are receiving a lot of play over at Tomatoville ...
This thread is about Baker Creek's seed vending reputation:
http://www.tomatoville.com/viewtopic.php?t=553
This topic asks what's up with all the fancy duds Jere's Gang sports:
http://www.tomatoville.com/viewtopic.php?t=3634
In this thread, halfway down the first page, somebody disses Baker Creek for "high seed prices," but several others come to BC's defense:

You might wanna keep an eye out for ongoing comments ... you know how these message boards can get kinda squirrely ;)

I noticed that we had several Tomatovillians joining iDig this past week or so. I'd like to see them post more here, however, I don't tend to post much over there so I guess that's being unreasonable isn't it? :p :D
Tomatoville is a good site with good people, but personally, I can't 'talk tomato' all the time..

Alas, posted links to Tomatoville can only be viewed by registered members.
It's also noteworthy that Jere Gettle is the latest new member there.

Tomatoville® is very closely monitored to ensure that it remains a pleasant place to visit on the web.
As the Terms of Service state: "Personal attacks in public posts are not acceptable. This includes "baiting" or "flaming" for you Internet old-timers. You are entitled to your opinion, as long as that opinion does not reflect poorly on another member. Remember that it's ok to disagree, as long as it's done in a civil manner."
We have found it to be a very effective rule that rarely needs to be enforced. People, for the most part are good by nature and the few malcontents that slip through the manual membership approval process are quickly reminded of the policy.
I personally welcome both the novice and expert alike, to join Tomatoville® and participate in the forums. The Internet has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for us all to both learn and share out knowledge with others; tomato or otherwise. ;)
I would also like to applaud Jere for providing another outlet to allow this to take place. Although I do not post much, I enjoy reading idigmygarden.com's forums. :)

Interesting that those negative remarks are no longer there and the Thread about Baker Creek comments of seed and service is also missing.

Gary,
All of the messages originally within the 3 threads to which I posted links at the top of this page are still there intact as they were 10:36 am, Dec. 29.
But you have to be a member of Tomatoville to access those links apparently.
You are a member, so I don't know why you're not seeing the same thing I am.
Anyway, the one fellow who accused Baker Creek of overpricing has not responded to my challenge regarding his "unfounded" criticism, so I guess he was just blowin' smoke.

GGG, I had posted on that Thread and received several e-mails that there had been additional comments. When I signed in large print indicated that there was no post with that title. I then went to both sites and could not find them.
After closing out at Baker Creek, I went back and there they were. I don't know what happened. lol

Rumors are that it's becoming quite an elitist group. Supposedly some have been kicked off for being "disrespectful" but I suppose that's a valid reason. If they don't like your Internet handle, you may not even get in. Used to enjoy the forum founder when he was a regular on Garden Web 4 or 5 years ago. A real live cannon who took shots at anyone! Never held the truth back. His report on what he thought about Marianna's Peace was almost a classic! Hadn't seen a posting by him for ages and everyone thought that he'd died. Probably just got tired of arguing with fools!

Joan, if you didn't register yet, you need to do that first. That's no big deal, it's only to keep spammers out. At the top of the page, click on the button that says "Register". Or click on the link "Become A Tomatovillian™!" farther down.
It looks to me like quite a few members here are also members there, except maybe for Pidge, whose sour grapes sound a little, um, sour. Tomatoville is a nice place, same as IdigMyGarden is. :)

For anyone wondering what oldgaredneck's rant is about, he couldn't find one of his own posts and thought it was censored/deleted. It wasn't, it's still right there where he left it, ... :)

My sincerest apologies to all - I have requested to be removed from Tomatoville, as I do not want to be anywhere I cannot state an opinion, wrong though it may be at times, and also where I don't feel welcome.
Happy New Year and continued Blessings!:D

Old ga redneck, at least you got in. Lot of folks saw bhpigeon2 as the latest new member for most of a day on the 26th. Still ain't been allowed in to even have a peek at what goes on in there. Never any problems like that at Tomato Mania. ALL tomato growers are welcome there.

You may have to register with Yahoo! to view the posts. Then everything is there back to 20 May 2001. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TomatoMania/
Also, they've got a huge tomato seed bank for use by members.

Hi Bunkie,
May I ask what username you selected to apply for membership?
No need to post it here, if you feel uncomfortable doing so. You can email it to webmaster@tomatoville.com if you like. ;)
We've approved all the recent applications, so I'm guessing perhaps the email address you furnished might be mispelled or incorrect?
Have you tried to log in at all since applying? In any event I'd like to offer my assistance in solving this problem. :)
Please do let me know.

Bunkie, that's as far as I get also. Now the membership list will no doubt show that bhpigeon2 is in there twice and he's not! One wonders what's going on "behind the green door"!

Thanks,

Yes, in order to gain access to the forums you must submit a request for membership. There is no membership fee, by the way.
All requests are manually reviewed and are either activated or declined; usually within a few hours of submission.
Tomatoville® is a virtual gated community for many reasons. Keeping the forums viewable to members only prevents people from linking our content or images to other sites, which saves on bandwidth usage costs. Manually approving new members also serves to keep out spammers and those that have a history of being combative and abusive in other Internet discussion forums.
We are the largest single group of tomato growers anywhere on the Internet and our moderators are known around the world as some of the most respected authorities on tomato culture. We also have exclusive, ongoing breeding projects as well as a very active seed exchange forum. There are also forums dedicated to many regional tomato events that our members attend. Our members also include many seed/plant companies, which gives our individual members a voice on what they think about their varieties, prices, descriptions, service, etc.
I would encourage anyone that is interested in growing tomatoes to stop by and take a moment to register. I'm confident that you'll find yourself among a very friendly, helpful and informative group of folks. ;)
p.s. We accept no advertising and are 100% ad-free. :D

Mischka you are too modest so let me add my 2 cents ! Guys and gals www.tomatoville.com is the best place bar none to learn about tomatoes ! Don't let the words gated community scare you! There are some fine and very knowledgeable people from all over the world there that will help you with any question you have and trust me i am a newbie when it comes to heirloom and o/p tomatoes and i had a bunch of dumb questions but everyone was so generous with their replies that i'm jumping in with both feet this year ! And i have even added a new bed just for the grow-outs i'm helping with . And the dwarf project they have going is just too kewl !! The seed swapping area is just loaded with just about any kind of mater you could imagine . I just can't say enough about it and the fine people there !So what's it gonna hurt give them a try hey if you don't like it just don't go back but i think you will stay. And yes they do talk about other veggies and fruit not so much on flowers and shrubs but hey it is a tomato site what do you expect but i believe that if you ask a question about them somebody will try and help. And Mischka is in the process of adding on so who knows what other forums we will have ! Yes i'm a member of this site as well as GW and have learned alot from each of them and enjoy everyone that is on them and hope to have alot more fun and learn alot more.

Internet forums were originally started to showcase differing opinions, not a gathering place for a bunch of YES people! Unfortuneately, some forums are led by those who refuse to accept that they may be wrong. And woe unto the poor sap who has the audacity to attempt to point that out! Just like making a major error and then spending the rest of one's life trying to cover it up. Someone, somewhere, knows that it exists and one can't put enough sugar coating on it to cover it up. There's always someone who knows the stink that's inside it!

Gary told me about Tomatoville a month or so ago, and I signed up. When I visit that site, sometimes I just sit back and marvel at all the stuff those folks know. It's certainly not as "informal" as IDig, but well worth joining.
Many of the folks over there are real "legends" in the world of tomatoes. Their names were even familiar to a rookie like me. They've been most gracious, informative, and helpful.

You'll indeed find it very interesting. We're there but quiet about it. Blocks can only be put on an individual e-mail or IP addresses. The effort to register as bhpigeon2 and bhpigeon confirmed something else that we already suspected.
