I live in Missouri, WE'VE HAD A MILD WINTER SO FAR, and am going to start planting lettuce at the end Of Jan.
Beets I'm not quite as sure of. I've planted beets in the Spring and done well. Can anyone tell me if they have had success Planting beets @ the end of Jan or Feb.? What's the earliest they can be planted in the MidWest?
Thanks John

i dont know- i grew up here, this is my first year back- and i am hoping for some sort of winter ahead. the colder, the wetter, the better. otherwise, and i'll worry about our lovely forests, i'll worry about the years ahead for my orchard.
i guess putting seed in the ground is one way of daring winter to come on!
hope others have some insight.

I planted beets before on valentines day, maybe that was just a good year in Mo. But here in Mn. I am lucky to have them in by April

This is the information from my vegetable planting calander.. I obtainted this through The Missouri Extesnsion office. For central Missouri
--beets are planted 3/15-4/15 and8/1-8/10
---lettuce is planted :
leaf---3/15-5/10 and 8/1-8/29
butterhead---3/15-4/20 and 8/1-8/10
Romaine---3/15-4/20
head---3/20-4/25
Since MO weather is so unpredictable, I would think that Jan is way too early to plant your lettuce, --unless maybe you are growing in containers. Frost is ok, but I think a hard prolonged freeze will kill the plants.
Where in Mo do you live. If you contact the extension office, they will sell you a planting guide for about a dollar. It beats guessing the dates. Since following this guide, I have had geat success in planting.
