The old weather thread is getting too crowded and confusing. Let's use this one if you want to discuss the weather.

West, Mid-Georgia, highs in the 50's, lows 30 and climbing. The sun is back, which means my greenhouse is a hot house again. Will see what the snow storm in the snow storm in the rockies will do.

I woke up late (still fighting a cold...) and found a note, "Please check the fire at mom's today. She has one going, but since it will be so cold she doesn't want it to go out..."

So, I thought I'd better log on and check the weather forecast... It didn't appear any worse than normal, except they were calling for snow tonight. Within minutes, the snow began to fall.

Now it has puffed up into a blizzard (for us, anyway.) It will be interesting to see if we get more than the 1 - 2 inches they're calling for...

Same here, maybe even a little more. There has been lots of drifting. I hear more snow is on its way this weekend.

Heat Wave! Mid 20's in Chicago. Not for long - back to the single digits next several days. Not much snow at all this year. Makes me worry that summer will be very wet again.

Got some snow yesterday afternoon, about 3 inches. Nice & powdery. It's beginning to melt a little today, but the weather.com says a little more this pm. Maybe it'll get rid of some of the BUGS!

This is the 2nd of Feb,14 degrees when I got up this AM,will reach 20,tonight 9,wind chill -1,next several days in the teens day time, night any where from 9 down to 1 degrees,so cold, guess this will kill some of the bugs, I think I'd take the bugs rather than these temps. The wind 10 to 20 mph.Maybe next Thur, we may see 30 degrees.Hope everyone keeps warm and not to much trouble with your animals, children, and cars.

The high here today was supposed to have been in the mid 40's. But, it felt colder because of the wind. This is cold for us and has been this way for over a week now. It would be great news if we do have an early spring.

I have a Dahlia order that is hung up waiting for warm weather in OH.And, you're going to be waiting a while. We won't get out of the single digits for a couple of days. We're going to have substantially below normal temps for the next week. If you need the ground to be thawed before your dahlias can ship, you probably won't see them until the end of the month ...

Feb-5, God must of heard us talking about all the insects and losing our crops ,because we sure are getting a cold blast, when I got up this AM it was 8 below zero, the wind has been blowing which makes it worst, wind chill in Chicago is 20 or more below.Surely it won't last to much longer.I know it could be a lot worst, there's bad weather everywhere.

LG - I love the house, you don't see many like that around here. Classic.

It was 68F here yesterday...

Lavandula Girl
February 7th, 2007, 02:36 PM
The house is neat, isn't it? It needs a lot of work, but the windows are new and efficient, and we have zoned temp control with heat pumps, so we're cozy. Never mind that we had to tear out the dining room floor due to old termite damage, and are now walking on hardiboard while we decide how to deal with flooring. (It's one of those things where you could do the floor, but it should follow into the kitchen, and the kitchen was built with no cupboardry, so we should remodel that before doing the floor, and we'd really like to extend the kitchen about 6 feet, so we should... and on and on and on... groan!) Thanks, though - the house has almost 100 years of history, and we really think it's awesome!

My son goes to college in Oswego, NY. Yup, they had over a foot of snow Sunday. Over 4 feet Tuesday, more yesterday. Forecasters are saying by the end of the week the totals will get over 100"!! And that is just for this week. And here, 3 hours east, we have maybe 2 inches. Very unusual for us, but it has been cold with wind chills in the -15 range.

It's only -10' here tonight. Still little snow here. Farmers top soil is blowing away with gusty winds though. Going to have a warm spell tomorrow with hopes of 20' above 0. Heat wave in Wisc! Got the bug today, bought a few seed packets, pots and a small rack for greenhouse. Am going to try some Square Yard Gardening this year....have any of you tried it and is it successful?

FlowerPower, I'm not in the valley. I'm up in the hills about 5 miles outside of Middleburgh. Usually we get lots of snow, but not this year! My son in Oswego says it is well over 120" now for the week. Redfield, just a little north and east of him has gotten over 136" and are going for the all time NY state record of most snow in a week.

bluelacedredhead
February 12th, 2007, 08:26 AM
Geez Betty, I was just looking up something online that I can't get here, but can purchase in Watertown, Syracuse and a couple of stores in between...Again, I think I'm waiting til July before I venture across the bridge :D

Aside from the obvious fact that 120 to 136" of snow in one week is just way tooooooo much, I'm sure there will be other problems such as flooded basements if the weather changes drastically.

Saturday on the radio, the cancellation announcements were too many to even conceive of. Yet the announcers were begging people (if they could) to attend a firefighter's benefit Saturday afternoon for a couple who lost their house..I do hope there were a few brave souls out there who made it to the event.

May your son be safe throughout this.

And yeah, what's a couple more inches of snow if it sets a record, LOL.

I couldn't believe the rain gauge when I went out to check on the greenhouses. Just over 3 inches in the past 24 hrs! I'm sure glad it stayed just above freezing last night, but the North wind is blowing pretty good, and the temps are sure to drop now. Looks like we are going to go thru the usual Ozark "One more cold snap" that we keep getting in the late winter and spring. Single digits by tomorrow nite. Strong

We're getting the ice/snow thing, "wintry mix" is what the weather channel calls it. Lots of fun to play in, but cold! Happy for the ice breakers on the metal roof, because the house's lid is a sheet of ice right now! You can kind of see where it's starting to slide off the kitchen roof here.

Hey, that house looks cooler with every new angle! Does it have 3 chimneys?

bluelacedredhead
February 13th, 2007, 10:59 AM
Lav, Be Very Very Careful wandering around outside to take pics. I never noticed the chimneys, but I sure took a good look at the antique (at least 45 yr old??) light fixture in the window!! I know, it could be replica, but I'm betting a house in good repair that hasn't been tampered with and "upgraded" could very likely have original fixtures left in it. :D

Lavandula Girl
February 13th, 2007, 11:00 AM
Yep - three working chimneys - access for a wood or coal stove in every room but the bathrooms and the enclosed porch. We have an old coal stove that my husband is refurbishing for the living room. On days like today, it'd be nice to have. We do have heat pumps. You can kind of see one in this pic - under the photinia, between the bench and the house, where the side of the house angles in toward the dining room wall

Lavandula Girl

We're having a blizzard! It's been snowing for over a day now. We have white-out conditions (you can barely see to the end of the block) and snow is piling up everywhere and blowing from all directions. And it's cold-- so cold I can barely keep the apartment warm-- we have the shades drawn, the heat on, the supplemental space heater on, layed clothes and we're still cold. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a fireplace to curl up in front of with a book and a cup of hot tea, but I actually still have to leave the house and go to work! I am definitely dreaming of summer right now...

FP, yes, I'm "The Man" when I close school. :D

Snow will be mostly done by morning. We received about 10"-12" and some ice for good measure. Power flickered once this evening, but that's it. Am dreading shoveling our 120' driveway ... which is all uphill ...

Now, temperatures are sinking into the lower teens and the winds are coming up to 20+mph. Roads will be a mess in the morning.

Glad to hear that it is subsiding in IL and OH. Kitchensqueen, I saw pics just a few minutes ago of rush hour in Chicago tonight..HOpe you arrived home alright and managed to stay warm...

When one tires of looking at the snow and cold in the northern zones, it's easy to go "live" to Southern California via various live cameras. Through them, I can keep track of what my half-sister is enjoying or hating in Santa Monica via live 24/7 webcams.

This seems to be "The winter that was"[ or "is"] for the whole US, including us further south in the Ozarks. We just finished with 3 inches of rain in 24 hours then frigid 40 MPH winds out of the North and snow flurrys. Now it's single digits temps for two nights and on to mid 50's by weekend. We've gotten spoiled for winters here for 3-4 yrs, hav ing the "El Nini" effect, or global warming? Strong

We have 8 to 10 inches of snow now,Springfield IL has 15 inches, the wind has died down, the drifts around the house are at least 24 or more inches.See what you guys in the south are missing. The storm is past and the "dig out" begins in earnest. We had about 6 inches of light snow 2-3 inches of sleet (with a little ice thrown in for good measure) and then another 3 inches of blowing and drifting snow on top. Close to 12" for us. Our street was just plowed about two hours ago. Guess I don't have an excuse not to go to church tonight ... :)

Sandbar,I was out digging my drive yesterday off and on, would go in to get warm and rest a little.Every year I promise myself to get a blade for the riding mower or snowblower, then when its all over I think, well- we usually have mild winters, maybe I won't need one.Going up hill would be much harder to clear off.Maybe this will be the last of bad weather, I keep telling myself it can't last to much longer. We are expecting more snow Sat, don't know how much. When I got up this AM the temp was 5 below, high will be around 17.

We got 2.5 feet of snow yesterday, 40 mph winds that made blizzard conditions. But, my son goes to college in Oswego, NY. The total they had just from last week's storm was 141"! Strange how we wish for the cooler temps when it's summer and want it to be cold enough in the winter months to help kill off weeds and bugs, but when it does get cold, all we think about is spring and summer. Guess you could say we're all just human, after all.

We're going to have what might be our last snow tonight, here in Southern Missouri. It was so warm, and then this! But that's all right; I wasn't quite ready for spring yet anyway.

We got about 5 1/2 inches of wet snow yesterday. My poor photinia, which had just recovered from the ice storm last week, got bent to the ground again. Here are the photos - the first one shows it bent over, the second after I'd shaken the snow off. Loved the snow - we had several snowball fights... I won.

El Gee, it's great to see someone who can still appreciate the wonder of a fresh fallen snow. Congratulations on your victory!

Today, the first day of March, it's a thunderstorm. It feels like spring--not just because we've had some warm days, but bewcause of the rain showers. In the winter there were rain showers, but always with something else, like ice or sleet or snow. This storm is just rain.

Snow gone. Frigid temperatures back. Low of 8 tonight with a high of 25 tomorrow.

Ran out of propane last night. Supposed to be on an auto-fill program with the gas supplier. They apparently "forgot" to fill our tank last time around. Amazing how quickly they can pump $700 worth of gas into your tank (about 4 minutes).

Hey Guys; The last two days have been in the low 90*s.Tomato plants have sprouted in beds where I didn't pick all the fruit because I had too many.they are about 6 inches high and I have most of my others (seeds) coming up in the greenhouse.I of course have Way too many var.s planted and will have to greatly expand my beds.-

I, of course, have informed the war-mongering Bush administration that Zman is hiding a Tomatoerrorist in his garden. Bombing will commence in two minutes ... :D

When I lived in Venice, Ca 30 years ago there were a few small backyard gardens.
You are fantastic.
Can you send pics of your garden?

Don't worry! [gardeners in the Ozarks at least.] Good weather is on the way! In fact, if we have one of "those" Springs, we may have weather rivaling Zebraman's in a few weeks. They are talking possable mid-70's by the end of next week. Strong
