hi all.. i would like to host a gathering at my place last weeknd in july(28th).. as i stepped out just now in sub zero temps its great thinking of july,, i thought of a food feast/ barbecue.. other possibilites include a picnic at nearby lake and state park with boat rentals and swimming facilities etc ..hopefully my garden will be going strong by then.. other options would be a trip to ithaca about 30 miles either that day or next day for theose wishing to stay over....inexpensive accomodations nearby.. to visit cornell and see their plantation gardens... hierloom gardens.. and community gardens etc etc.. lots to see there.. of course southerners wishing to visit this ni cce aprt of the country are welcome as well.. maybe even jere and emilleee can make it... please send me your feedback or input if you would be interested in this gathering celebration... ira/ alias stonysoil

Beer does not go bad after 3 months. In fact, the Ommegang Brewery (where the beer was purchased) has cases of beer aging right now in Howe Caverns. The cases are left for 1 yr in the cave. As long as beer is kept out of sunlight and minimal temp fluctuations, it will last a long time.
Johno, of course we wish you could join us. We could call you from Stony's place. Would that help a little? lol

Stoneysoil, Breaks my heart! I'll be up in Massena NY to visit my Aunt the 1st week in July! I can't make that trip from Indiana twice in one month! I've been dying to meet some gardeners with my passion for good ole "geek" conversation for a long time. I haven't found too many people in my neck of the woods (suburbs, actually) that are as crazy as I am about gardening.
Regretfully, Hortlady

I think I am going to keep a few tomatoes in pots this yr. I have some varieties that are 65-70 days. Just those extra 2 weeks in May will really help. We have to have at least one ripe mater at this "garden" gathering. lol
In fact, one of the varieties is Sub Arctic Plenty which I just got from BC. they say it's the world's earliest. Let's hope so.
stonysoil
February 19th, 2007, 07:32 AM
i doubt i will have many tomatoes at the 28th .. but im gonna try starting some cherokees extra early.. i should have zuchinni... beans,, lettuces.... by then..if the tomatiesa rent ripe we will fry up some green ones lol fp.. and blrh

BLUELACED, Now I'm really going to be missed. I always have loads of tomatoes by the end of July! And bluelaced, I'll also be going to Sharbot Lake, Ontario. Too bad I'll have only one day in Massena and one day in Sharbot before the long ride home.........Hortlady
stonysoil
February 20th, 2007, 06:28 AM
im going to start .. some cherokees and the brandywine fp sent me mid march in large peots so we will have a great tomatoe salad for my gathering or maybe slice them om sourdough bread sprinkled with olive oil basil and sea salt
flowerpower
February 20th, 2007, 06:51 AM
We can only hope on the maters. lol But there are other things at least Stony and I should have in season. Lets see, I will have garlic, onions, herbs, scallions, garlic chives, beans, summer squash, and hopefully some lettuce and other greens.
My BF said if bottled beer has yeast in the bottom, it could last indefinitely. Also the higher the abv, the longer it will last. He just opened an Imperial Stout from Middle Ages that he has had for at least a yr. I tasted it. It had more of a brandy-like taste than it does right from the tap or even cask-conditioned.

February 23rd, 2007, 06:38 AM
hey redbrick... im so glad your all able to attend..of course i have room outside to camp but i can reccomend a great campground less than 9 miles from me..its called bowman lake state park and they have everything... trails...fishing swimming boating .. camping .. you name it.. they are in oxford ny and there phone for reservations is 800 456 2267 or there eother number is 607 334 2718
stonysoil
February 23rd, 2007, 08:30 AM
i also wanted to mentioned to all those attending i am less than 2 miles form this great bog area that has a micro enviroment very unique.. plant species that are very rare .. including many carnivorous plants... i wwas told there are insects there that are one of a kind such as moths..its on state land thats an unmarked trail but well worth the uniqueness to see

Stony, thanks so much for the offer, but I think it'll work out better for all if we check out that State Park. I wouldn't want to impose on your bathroom facilities, and I'm sure Stephen will want a campfire at least one night. Besides, could you imagine if everybody decided to take you up on the offer? It'd either look like a tent city, or Woodstock all over again! LOL!

Just give me one species of veggie or flower that you are most smitten with. Don't worry about variety. Just a one word answer will suffice. E.G. Wintersquash (I said one word, lol)

stony, you will have to show me the currants. I know they are growing around here. Either I am totally clueless or the birds are picking them clean. Probably clueless. :)
bluelacedredhead
February 26th, 2007, 08:31 AM
FP, I have black currants here that I put bird netting over because my birds and the wild birds were picking them clean, or so I thought. Turns out that the chipmunk's were the ones doing the thieving. Bird netting wasn't keeping them out.
flowerpower
February 27th, 2007, 05:17 AM
Not too many chipmunks, but there are mice and other critters that would find them tasty. Bears, maybe?
bluelacedredhead
February 27th, 2007, 09:22 AM
FP, I forgot about the fact that my Neighbours had a fair sized patch of red currants. They had some kind of insect infestation the past few years? Totally cleaned the fruit and the leaves right off the plants?? They were getting up in years and so didn't seem to concerned about since they no longer did any preserving. Maybe you have some of the same, although you'd notice the naked plants!!
Gooseberries and currants have a distinct shape to their leaves. Find a pic of currant bushes or gooseberry bushes and then you will know what to look for.
