Yeah - I saw the newscast of this on CNN. Pretty funny. To be fair, though, this Yankee has been know to drop a "y'all" or two since moving to Old Virginny. The only politician who's accent never changes at all is Cheney, and that's just because the manufacurers only put that one voice chip in at the cyborg factory.

Well Hillary doesn't live in the south anymore, she's from the north originally and she lives in the north now so she's a yankee.
I guess she'll figure out that affecting a fake southern accent won't raise her poll numbers among southerners.

If Americans voted based on verbal skills, or lack thereof, I doubt Dubya would be in office! I truly hope that people will base their vote on something more substantive than whether a person (who by the way lived in Arkansas for about 20 years) twangs a bit in a speech. Personally, I wouldn't vote for her, but I didn't vote for that wordsmith we have in office, either. That opinion is based on the substance of the speech, not the regionality of the accent.

I'm not talking about anyone voting on verbal skills. Nor am I talking about normal accents I'm talking about Hillary putting on a pretense.
Just because she lived in Ark. for 20 years does not make her a southerner ..and even then, the deep south is not the same as Ark, nor are the accents...and most southerners don't appreciate fake accents.

A true southerner can tell if it's a true southern accent. So, that being said, since I'm from deep Mississippi, that wasn't a true southern accent!!!

Same for Dubya speaking with a Texas accent. He's a Connecticut carpetbagger, and the only Bush who affects that Texas drawl...

He doesn't sound like any Texan I know (and I know several from various regions in TX)...so I'm not sure when he uses the 'drawl' you are talking about.

Sorry, I should have put "drawl" in quotation marks, as it doesn't sound like a Texas accent to me either, but more like a Yankee trying to sound like a local.
Not that Hillary's is a whole lot better...
At Ole Miss, people from the Gulf Coast used to jokingly call us Yankees because some of us were from northern Mississippi. Of course, a lot of them didn't have a typical Southern accent themselves because of the New Orleans influence.

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, then moved to Northern Virginia during high school. Even the old blue haired DAR types in Alexandria, Virginia couldn't understand me, so I had to work on morphing my accent to something a little more phonetically akin to "east coast southern."
By the time I went to East Carolina, I even had a little trouble understanding certain coloqualisms from Coastal Plainers. For the past 35 years, I've lived immediately across the Ohio River from Kentucky, and I can affirm the diversity of accents on each side of the Middle Border at least along this stretch is remarkable even among families whose members reside on both sides of the river and among longtime residents who originated on one side but moved to the other.
My point in all that is that accents change with time. Some change more quickly than others. Very few are immune to some evolution of nuance.
I'm not sure I understand the intent of the original post. I clicked on the link that said "Hillary Fakes a Southern Accent" and saw absolutely nothing within the 1:45 tape segment wherein Sen. Clinton appears to be "faking" a southern accent ... rather she seems to be employing a bit of stage flair while quoting an African/American author in an apparently successful delivery to an African/American audience.
What is it exactly that nearsighted folks don't understand about Bill and Hillary's obvious appeal with their African/American constituency? Or is it just political jealousy? Or is it neo-con assumption that Republicans somehow hold proprietary rights to ALL the Christian vote?
And when did it become verbatten to have a little fun at political events?

I have a drawl, twang, slur, accent thing going I guess.

I've lived in Louisiana for 55 years, and didn't notice a switch to a Southern accent--a bit more informal and loose in her delivery, perhaps, but no drawl.

Oh, I already have my carpet bag ready for the next time we win! :D A friend took my Dad on a tour of Richmond a few years ago. He says with all those Confederate monuments, you all have a lovely tribute to second place there! (Oh, and I said all this with a good Connecticut accent, by the way... with my teeth firmly clenched, looking down my nose! hahahaha!)
