well, let me tell you, i'm too old to have made the mistake i did. several years ago, i planted broom corn, irritated me to no end when it came up the next 5 years, so i griped about it on another forum--described it, even. found out that i had a nice start of johnson grass in my garden!!
luckily, i found out in july, so i spread plasic over it for about 6 weeks, then, i carefully tilled the area, sifting out any roots i could find. only spring will tell how successful i was. luckily, the roots are pretty big--unlike that blasted bermuda grass that i've battled for 40 years. now--if theres a proven solution for that...........

Roundup, or other product containing glyphosphate, works wonders, although it frequently takes a second application. If your "good" plants are already up, as I'm sure they are by now, you will need a helper to carry a shield for you. Also, NEVER use it unless the air is still, i.e., no wind.

No takers on the roundup idea? Okay, it's probably not on the approved synthetics list, anyway...
Cardboard boxes from your local refridgerator store might be a more organic approach. They make a tough mulch and they cover a lot of space in a short amount of time.

I am pretty much anti-chemical, but the two exceptions I make are for johnson grass and poison ivy.
I am about ready to add spiny amaranth to that list, but I am not sure even chemicals can kill that stuff.
