I know it's on May 6th/7th...but are there any official times that the events start and end each day?

Thanks!

I think they usually start about 10 each morning.

Gates open to the public at 10 AM and nominal closing time is 6 pm. But we don't have the sheriff throw people out.

So we could all just camp out all night and sing songs around a campfire? <grin>

LaRae

As long as none one starts in with Kumbya. <G>

Ok since some of you have been before can you tell me if they will have food for sale? I mean like for lunch etc? If they do, what types of food do the vendors sell?

I'm trying to find out for a group of about 10 of us that are coming.

They do have food, but the lines get long at the food window. Must be worth waiting for.

Insofar as the camping, I THINK that Jere once even encouraged folks to camp the night before. Is that still the case?

Cliff Timmons

Oh yeah bean soup.

I was just kidding about camping <grin>

LaRae
April 20th, 2007, 10:15 AM
Ok but do they have real food. Vendos who sell real meat (hamburgers, hotdogs etc) pork or chicken?

I am not a vegetarian ..actually none of us (I think we are up to 12 or 13 now) coming are, so we need to know if we need to bring our own food or eat elsewhere.

I bought some fried chicken down the road.

But I can say, I had the veggie burgers last year and didn't know what they were until afterwards. They are good.

I didn't venture into Tofu world. I'm afraid they guys at work would beat me up if they found out.

LOL chicken!

I've had portabella burgers and they were quite good. However I'm not a fan of tofu.

Thanks...I can pass the info along to the rest of the group.

A tip for the people who organize these events: Bring in vendors who serve other menu choices besides vegetarian. I imagine alot of people who go to these sorts of things do eat meat. It'll draw a more diverse crowd and meat eaters spend money too :)

Sometimes the man who raises beefalo sells beef jerky, but that's probably about it on meat or meat products. But you can bring a ham sandwich or something if you don't think you can pass one afternoon without consuming animal flesh. Or after the show, stop at one of the many fine Mansfield resturants!

Just to clarify: gates open at 7AM for vendor setup, and 10 AM for the general public. I corrected my previous post on this, which was written while I was drinking my first cup of coffee this AM....

In my bias opinion, it was good.

I'm far from being a Veggie Head. We raise rare hogs here, but I often invite them for dinner when they aren't so rare. ;)

But I find dishes like Chili (with beans) or Ratatouille quite tasty and are substantial enough that I don't miss the meat. Try something like that. That is of course, assuming some of the food vendors at B/C festivals would serve something along those lines and not just Fast Food.

What kinda rare hogs? I saw my first mule footed hog a couple months ago. Interesting animal.

We actually do eat vegetarian now and then. I also make some dishes with very small amounts of meat and we eat quite a bit of fish.

There is (or at least there was..not sure it's there still) a vegetarian resturant in Springfield over off St Louis or Walnut ..somewhere around that part of town. I went there a few times when I was working in Springfield. Some of their food was really good. If it's still there and you ever go...get the portabella burger.

I couldn't be a strict vegetarian though. I'd have to be one of those ovo-lacto-porcine, bovine, ovine and caprine types. :D

Don't forget Chickine, Turkine, Guinine and Goosine...:D

To answer your question, we raise Tamworth's. Red Pigs..of course. Somewhat smaller and slower to mature than large white commercial types, but generally, we've found them to be calmer and easier to handle as well. Oh, and tasty too. ;)

LaRae

A friend of mine in OK is getting some Tams this year to raise. She's really looking forward to it. I guess they have some nice bacon! She's going to (I think) get a Tam boar and cross him into some common or commerical type pigs she plans to pick up.

I forgot 'fishine' too! <L>

I went in 2005 and it was a great time, I drove from wyoming last time, long hard drive, will try flying out from Denver this time, rent a car in Springfield and go to mansfield from there. I enjoy the speakers, lots to learn. Just wondering if there is a line up for the speakers and the time they are scheduled, or will we not know until the day of the event?

Johnny I discovered after searching around on the site that if you click on the yellow/red tomato (I think that's a tomato) on the top right it takes you to the garden/seed website and then you can find the links for the events during the year...with more info.

If you are talking about Mt Vernon Missouri then yes I do. There is an excellent Chinese Buffet right on the main strip called Bamboo Gardens.

They have some excellent food and also a sushi bar. They make alot of their own stuff from scratch and many of the veggies are from a garden the owner raises.

The best time to go for dinner is around 5 or 6:00 pm.

I thought that because I was late, I had to wait in a long line. After talking to several people, I think the line was pretty short. Some folks were in a line extending to London Road!

Had a veggie burger and apple fritter, got some plants from Chad, and had a good ole time.

Met Mickey Ihateweeds, Homestead Paul, and met up with Eccentric follies, Georgie Sims, Randel Greenzone, Louanne, and Chad Creation Groans. Plus several people not on the forum.

Going to sleep now.

I feel nauseated. :( Our little group was going to go up to the festival yesterday. We checked the radar map in the am and it said that it was going to be bad weather, with thunderstorms possibly producing large hail. I just talked with Myrna and she said they had a little rain, but it was a nice day. I just can't believe we missed out. Next time, I'll just go and take along a slicker suit (just in case)! :)

I am new to this forum and to heirloom gardening. I went to the May festival and had a great time. Even my 4 kids, ages 1 to 6 had a great time. Thank you so much for everyone who had booths there and to all of you who helped me figure out what I am doing! I have told everyone I have talked to the past 2 days about how wonderful the festival was and such a great place to take a family to. Thank you!

Hello All,
I drove down from Kansas City, Kansas to meet my friend Cindy in Garden City, Missouri and we had us a little road-trip down to the Baker Creek May event. The weather up here was rainy and stormy and I was a bit concerned that the storm might follow us but it didn't. Once we got past Clinton things started looking better and by the time we were in Springfield it was warm and sunny. We thoroughly enjoyed the event! I bought some Cuban tomato seedlings and a Ho Chi Minh pepper seedling. Also stocked up on seeds! Wonderful time! Wonderful atmosphere! Got a glimpse of Mr. Gettle in his cowboy duds. Nice crowds. We are already planning to come back in August. Too busy with the farm right now to take many weekend days off. Baker Creek is such a valuable resource! I know a lot of work is put into these events and the low cost, free parking, ease of access is a gift. I really appreciate it and it is close to home. Nice road trip! Thanx again for a great time!

I'm pretty late in posting my comments about the May Event, and I can be pretty wordy when I write but WOW!!!

I've been wanting to visit for a long time, but waiting was well worth it. There are 2 things I'd like to comment on: the wide variety of peaceful people, and the family atmosphere. My hippy daughter is at a crossroads in her life and she had an awesome time doing all kinds of hippy-type things in a non-drug, non-alcohol atmosphere. We both met lots of really cool people, made enough on Sunday to pay for our trip and bartered like crazy on Monday with other vendors.

Good work Jere and to your crew! I talked to a lot of people before I found any that had attended before. I heard somewhere the May event is about five years old? I can't even imagine where it will be in another five years. The May event is the only one during the year that we can attend, but we plan to come back many more times. Next time hopefully with another person to man the booth so I can actually hear the speakers and attend the auctions and enjoy the music!
