Did anyone catch the Wife Swap show on fox last night? A snooty pampered women went to stay on a farm ( I didn't catch where the farm was because I missed the beginning) but I'm thinking it was around here SW MO because the man who lived on the farm was wearing a Licking Mo organic shirt most of the show. Anyway he mentioned going to the "Baker Creek HeirloomSeed "planting festival every spring. How bout that free advertising? ;)

WHOOOOT!!! 10 friends and I are headed for the Asheville area the last weekend of August, and it's GOOD TO KNOW there are organic grocery stores! I'm in charge of cooking because I did catering, and ::snooty nose in the air:: I want organic!!

We'll be staying in....yes, Bryson City? Heading to Asheville on Saturday.

Thanks for that little tidbit, Grass Hopper!

Let me know when you are coming. We also have twelve tailgate markets in Buncombe county alone. If you want to do some food tourism check out www.asapconnections.org. We can hook you up on the food thing.

THANK YOU!!!! I will PM you just before that date to check it out.

got any good melons or watermelons growing?????

I can't wait! I've been to Asheville before and it's just beautiful. Michigan, as you probably know, is mostly flatland. :D I really found it gorgeous, but I tell you, some of the drop-offs in the mountains had my toes clenching the car floor through my shoes.

We will try them but they don't do well. We have very few days that reach the 90's. They bring them up from the foothills (about 20 minutes away), but they are not too creative when it comes to variety down there.

That might change this year though. There are some good new growers down there. Beware of the WNC farmers market!!! (Rachel Ray and the food channel did a big spread on it) Most of it comes from in trucks from GA and FL. Look for the "tailgate" markets. The Mountain Tailgate Market Association requires the vendors to grow their own. You will see lots of signs for the markets in the towns and cities. Most of them also have people selling heirloom and native plants as well.

I will definitely look for tailgate markets. I will PM right before for directions from you to find the best. Looking forward to my third visit to NC!
