Check this out...
I don't buy gum for my kids. My thirteen year old boy was walking around popping bubbles in his mouth, so I hollered at him "Where did you get that bubble gum?!" Know what he had in his mouth? Two handfuls of wheat kernels chewed into gluten! It behaves exactly the same. How many cavities do you think he'll get?
The best part? All the other kids now walking around looking like chipmunks with wheat in their mouth.

Hey dun, :) I don't let mine have gum either. My son already thinks I am a little crazy because I am always giving him herbs and green concoctions, I wonder what he is gonna think when I give him a handful of wheat kernels and tell him it's "gum". ;)

OK, I tried it myself, last night, and only got this little teeny thing. I got the trick from the kid. Chew up the kernels ( no easy task ) then put the mess in your cheek and suck the juice out, along with bran. This all started with a science experiment to find out if the wheat we grind is better for bread or non glutenous stuff like biscuits and cake.

P.S. Don't try to flavor it... we tried peach- yuk!

Hey DUN, Chewing wheat is not new. WE chewed it 60 years ago. Had forgotten that experience. What I do remember is sniffing the gasoline in the tractor gas tank. I think it was Solomon that said, "There is nothing new under the sun".

Bellepepper, I'm surprised you remember anything after huffing all that gas! ;) Doesn't that kill tons of brain cells?

One must take into account the phenomenon of "Survival of the Fittest". You see, when a brain killing substance like alcohol or gasoline or drugs enters the brain, only the slowest brain cells are captured. This, in turn, leaves the fastest, smartest brain cells to represent the entire brain. :)

I did this when I was little too. Bubble gum and sugared food in general were banned substances in our house. I'm 34 and have 1 cavitie.

That's certainly healthier than the paraffin we used to chew -- and make gloves out of -- when we were putting up jelly! We chewed gum, too, some flavors you don't see anymore -- clove, blackjack, ---

I can remember a candy called blackjack but not any gum. I think it was some kind of taffy.

Thanks, Zebraman.

The website says that Thomas Adams, Sr. introduced Black Jack gum, the first manufactured flavored chewing gum, in 1870.
It says Adams has stopped producing clove gum, but it does have cinnamon gum.

I would have guessed that the first was one of the mints.
