Anyone started with these before and can I put it in a pot for a month or so before I put it in my community plot?

Thanks!

I started mine from seed last year. I guess bare root gives you a year old plant instead of waiting for next year? I am hoping I will get artichokes from mine this year. Where are you buying them? Check the Garden Watchdog?
I am going to start some more this year and I am still trying to decide if I should start them indoors for a head start.
Let us know. I am interested in hearing your results!

Hi FarmerCathy,

It should be ok to keep your bare root in pot for a month when it is still dormant, just protect it from frost and it will do fine.
I started mine 2 years ago (march 2006) and they only produce some 3 flower head/plant that same year but their second year were slightly better ( around 4 to 5 flower head) but my mistake was, I let them to grow in a lump and not splitting them. I could actually getting more plant by splitting them during early spring but got no more space...:(. They will keep coming back each year, make sure you give them lots of straw during winter and never let it sit in the soggy grown or it will rot.

Hope this help,
Momol

groworganic.com has them. http://www.groworganic.com/item_FV360_Improved_Green_Globe_Artichoke_b.html Well, I guess it is a bunch of three. Maybe I will give one or two to my dad.

I suspect you are suppose to plant them right away and cover them against freezes. As long as they do not freeze they should be OK. The crowns are usually put under protective mulch all winter in the regular growing areas.

the instructions are on site.

They say it is important to plant immediately.

I would plan on planting more than one or two plants if you want to get much of a harvest.
