'Pumpkin Queen,
I will have to dig to see what I have to spare in my collection but it may take a few days. I do know that I have Red Warty Thing seeds that need a good home. My garden space is limited at the moment and they need more space than I can give them. But I'm also wondering how you like those Atomic Red and Cosmic Purple carrots? Have you grown any? Any challenges? Taste?

Here is my ruff copy of what I might consider sharing.
They are all heirloom variety pure seeds.

I have had to narrowed things down with moving, my current location, etc. Some will only go for something special, as they are extra special; but feel free to ask. Of course seeds are all special.

If you would like to know more about a particular variety, I will try my best to be helpful. As far as my storing method--my freezer.
The astericks are for my benefit.
Enjoy browsing!

What is the correct ph for growing tasty carrots?
Any particular ammendments that they love?
Thanks.

The best pH for carrots is 5.5-6.5. But as I mentioned before. compost helps buffer pH and supplies needed nutrients, so I would worry more about amending the soil than attaining the perfect pH. In the north they are grown in the spring and in the south they
are grown in the fall. Best atmospheric temps are between 60-70 degrees.

Do not use fresh manure, add this in the fall if you intend on using it. Manure causes the carrots to send out a lot of root branches.

I try to garden like the Chinese. After pulling out my produce, I ammend the soil and put some other plant in. After harvesting my veggies, I sprinkle a little rock phospate on my soil and then apply a generous amout of compost. I only fertilize with a sea weed/fish emulsion product. This works well for all my veggies.

I have some Ananas Noir tomato seed purchased this year from Bakers Creek. I would love to have a few new tomatos, if you would like to trade with me. I also am interested in Broccoli and Parsley. Anything really, I love to grow new things and just a little seed would get me started and I can save seeds, too. Let me know. :)

thanks for sharing!

the reason I asked about the ph was that I recently was told that the taste of the carrot has to do with the ph of the soil. which this person tests every year atleast 1X. Would this also have to do with taste of the beets that sometimes will taste bitter, or like dirt as I call it?

How do you do your composting?

also, when you say that after you harvest you plant something else in its place. Is this a green manure that you are tilling back into the soil at the proper stage? Or just another type of plant in your non-green-manure rotation?

Thanks for answering all my ponderings?

I have found that the key ingredient to raising good tasting (sweet) carrots, cantaloupe, tomatoes, watermelon and pumpkin, is phosphorus. Soils that are naturally higher in phos. will produce the best taste without amending, but for the most of us, we will have to amend our soil. Phosphorus is also important to producing more blooms on flowers, and good fruit setting and taste in raspberries and blackberries. Bone meal and rock phosphate are good natural sources of phosphorus. I avoid super phosphate that is found in most farmer's exchanges etc.

Where would I find an organic source of the rock phosphate? Probably something I'll have to order with the local resources being so limited.

Thanks.

Doc,
Have you tried a local farmers co-op? I know mine carries it and it was pretty cheap too.

For rock phosphate, try Nitron.com. I have ordered quite a lot of organic material from them as well as visited their store north of Fayettville, AR. Their prices are reasonable and I have found them reliable in shipping. They have soft rock phosphate; 5 lbs. for $5.00, 25 lb. for $8:20, and 50 lb. for $14.35. Be aware that shipping can cost as much or more than the product. My local farmer's exchange folks do not have rock phosphate. Wish they did. Does anyone know of a source with better prices?
