We avoid artificial sweeteners, but I didn't realize sucralose is Splenda, made by chlorinating sugar. Your body supposedly can't break it down to liberate calories, but some people seem to break it down or store it in their body like DDT, which has chemical similarities. My teenage son talked me into buying him Propel water, which purports to be a healthy sports drink. I checked the label, but thought sucralose was a natural sugar. He would play basketball after school, drink a couple Propels, and get a headache and stomachache that kept him up for hours. He would miss school and only feel better in the late afternoon, go out and play and drink Propel, and get miserable again. When we ran out of the 12 bottles we bought on sale, the problems eased up, but he was discouraged from trying to exercise. I get e-mail from the Dr. Mercola health news website, and I was reading about Splenda reactions when I found out it was sucralose. Some people have had effects requiring hospitalization. Pepsico should not add it to products without labelling it as an artificial sweetener on the front of the can. I complained to their customer service dpartment and they sent me coupons for $20 of Propel or Pepsi, neither of which I would touch with a ten foot pole. Also it is in some other products that also have sugar. We also found it in V-8 Splash. The Dr Mercola website has a list, also check out the new studies on Nutra-Sweet increasing cancer risk. It should be illegal to promote these chemicals to children.

http://www.mercola.com/ Type in a search for "Splenda" and you'll have ten articles to choose from. He is a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.), doesn't accept "lobbying" advertisers to pay for his website (much like the Heirloom Gardener is ad-free), and he has accurate and timely information that you will learn about long before you hear about it from mainstream sources. I'd recommend taking a few minutes to read his vision statement too--I'm sure most people on this forum would agree with it.

Isn't chemistry a wonderful thing?
My brother is a chemist for a Racing Fuel Company. He will not touch the stuff...
Or aspartame either. Makes his own shampoo and such, too.
Interesting that upon complaint, the mindset of the company is to offer you more of the garbage your complaining about. Funny thing is, most people would think thats a great deal. Yeesh.

Last year, I went on a diet to try to lose the 20 lbs I gained in nursing school. I did weight watchers and ate desserts with sucralose in them because of the low pts value (its a weight watchers thing). I started having 3 and 4 day long migraine headaches. I had suffered from migraines in the past, though not for some years, and so I just assumed that the stress of finishing school and starting a new career was triggering them. Then I got tired of the splenda sweetened desserts and switched to plain fruit. The migraines miraculously stopped!
BTW -- while in nursing school, I didn't have a garden. Now that I'm gardening again, the weight is gradually coming off.
I am now very careful to avoid all products with sucralose/Splenda.
