hey all,
i have a few hanging baskets that i started some nasturtiums in from seed. they started off great, growin and growin, but now the lower leaves are turning yellow. i pick them off and turn around and new ones are yellow. what's going on?? the potting mix isn't to wet. that's the first thing i checked. and they get plenty of sun in that spot. any help is appreciated.

Maybe the soil is too rich. Nasturtiums like it dry and do well in poor soil. Too much fertilizer means lots of leaves and few flowers. Have they flowered yet?

the nasturtiums just started to flower. lots and lots of buds though. i know that they like poor soil, but i gave them a little hit of some fish emulsion/seaweed fertilizer and they seem to be doing better. and if the fertilizer makes more leaves and less flowers, that's alright, because the leaves are yummy in a salad! but the flower are just a yummy and pretty too!!
thanks,
dennis

I am in central jersey, near new brunswick(for the time being-my heart is in the southwest)
since giving my nasturtiums a hit of fertilizer they are rocking. green and full of awesome flowers. i guess that's all they needed was a wee bit of food. we get hungry every once in a while to, why not them?
where in the catskills are you flower??

Den, I grew up right on Staten Island and have relatives in Hoboken, Bayonne and Jersey City. I am up in Schoharie County, near Howe Caverns. I am not too far from the Windham and Hunter ski areas.

hey flower, i used to go skiing up at hunter for many years when i was younger. it's beautiful up there. is it really zone 4? have you had your last frost yet? what do you have out now? i used to live in the mountains of colorado(at about 9000feet). gardening up there was tough. we had snow on our summer soltice party. about 2 inches. we welcomed the summer in anyway, outside with a big bonfire. i did have a nice potato crop that year though. i need to change the title of this thread from yellowing nasturtiums to yellow nasturtiums(and orange and red and pinkish). they are beautiful and more flowers everyday. i've been picking some for the dinner salad. it adds a nice touch. a little bit of the peppery zing, and the visual delight of seeing all that color in there. good stuff indeed. take care, be well

I am actually considered some part of Zone 5. But many Z5 plants just don't make it. I am at the top of a hill so there is alot of wind and even more snow. I suppose we had our last frost- if snow last week counts. lol
I have the majority of my stuff in. Peas, Lettuce. maters, pepper, eggplant, potato, onion, garlic and ass't herbs. Only need to put in squash and cantaloupe. Are you a big garlic person? Every year in Sept is the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival in Kingston which is huge. If you can go, it's worth it.
