View Full Version : Wal-Mart's "Green" Fertilizers. Worm Castings (question)

Went to the Wal-Mart(some might say "evil" Wal-Mart;)) yesterday, and looked around the gardening center.
Long story short, they now have "Green"(safe to use)fertilizers... such as one was a gallon or two jug of some "Earth Friendly"(looked ok from what I could tell on the label)...stuff, one had Worm Castings(liquid fertilizer), for example.
It was a little more than "regular" fertilizers..but not too much more.

There was one type, dry(powder), to use, also, mixed with water...but used"natural" items in it(but it was what one could call a "rip off" by Wal-Mart, in pricing..might be able ot find it at other garden centers).

Has anyone used worm castings, and if yes, how did the plants fare?

I've used worm castings with my seed babies for a couple of years now and have had almost no problems with Damp off of the babies.. I just sprinkle it around right after the little ones come up. works great for me . I also sprinkle some on all of my house plants in February .

Hi Gort!

Well, I've been interested in worm castings for my garden also, but you know I hate worms so much I've been avoiding even looking at the castings.

I know, Emerald, I should hang my head in shame. But I'm not afraid of snakes, rats, mice or other rodents and a girl's gotta have an "ick!" factor over SOMEthing!

Maybe if it's in a bag it'll be okay. worm "castings." Well, such a polite term for what it really is! :D

Have you guys ever seen the second "Ace Ventura" movie with the white bat? You remember how he reacts whenever he sees the white bat? That's what I do when I see worms. eeeuww! They stink on a rainy day, too!

:(

No worries Zephyr!! the worm poo that I get smells just like good compost, and is nice and dry and so far have not found one slimey little snot maker in the bunch... can't vouch for my potted plants tho.. found one wormin crawling around under my banana plant that was outside last year... and me I can't stand spiders myself!!!:eek: and yet I still let them live and love in my garden http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb1/emeraldwitch_2007/DSC00014.jpg

Gort, what I got from Walmart was from Terracycle in a gallon jug. Is this what you are talking about? Terracycle is an excellent, green, USA company. I have only used it on my houseplants so far, and am very happy with it!

worms are a most wonderful thing - They are slimy only when they aren't healthy.
Do you drink wine ? What gives it the kick is yeast poop. yum !!!!

That is one impressive spider. Could use more like that around here to get the cucumber and Japanese beetles. Had one take up residence in the flower bed last year. None of them showed in the main garden though.

It is hard to believe that I am so afraid of spiders, when every time a show on tv has them featured I have to watch and spider movies are some of my faves!! I get one to two of these monsters in my yard every year and I let them just reproduce at will, cuz I know that they will eat any bugs that threaten my garden.. Now if they would just take up a home not where I have to walk... web in your face while going to the garden.... Yucky. I kept waiting for her to just jump on my camera while trying to get her close up!!!:eek: p/s I do squash them in the shower tho!! I will not share my bathroom with those naughty things... lol

Being I can ID different spiders well I know which ones to keep around and which ones are road pizza. Btw being from Cali I got to share land with tarantulas no big deal since they are not dangerous and the famous black widow. Here we worry about brown recluse. Them suckers are road pizza for sure when I see them.

Hello,

I use worm castings and only worm castings in my flower garden as well as in my veggie garden! My Inlaws raise the worms and sell the stuff and I was amazed at how well my plants grow and how much bigger and healthier they were! If you are interested in this product please contact me!

Thanks for the info. I have seen some still for sale( 1 gallon liquid form).
I might get some in a few days, when I go to town. Put it on some of the plants that are struggling right now,or maybe wait until I see things getting ready to produce fruit/veggies,t hen use the worm castings for a booster.
