Yup, my fair english (decent) skin does NOT like sun. No tanning, just burning. even with spf 45 I still got my forehead burnt last weekend. Anyone know of a source for an inexpensive big wide brimmed hat so I don't keep roasting my face?

The Evil Store. Unfortunately. That's the only place to find stuff around here. Or the antique store. Oh - you said inexpensive, which is my own requirement, too. W** Mart (pardon my language) had them for $4. My daughter is fair, also, and must wear one.
I wish there were somewhere else to shop. It has been done. All the mom and pop shop have bit the dust and IT has the monopoly.

I was going to suggest WalMart as well.

I don't think they're evil. Heck, that's where I get my overalls. <grin>

I too burn in spite of sunblock. I bought my wide brim hat from www.sloggerstore.com. They have a couple of choices and I felt they were reasonably priced. You may want to check them out.

Do you have a sunbonnet pattern?

Yes, Wallyworld does have cheap prices. But not everything cheap is a bargoon. If you buy a hat there for $4 and it lasts 4 seasons, then it's a deal. But if it only lasts for one season, then what?

I set foot in Wallyworld about once a year whether I have to or not. I'm not saying all their stuff if poor quality. Quite the contrary. I'd just rather shop someplace else and get something different that not everybody else in town has.

We really liked, in MO, the MFA, Ace Farm & Home and Orscheln's. In OK they had to drag me out of Atwood's kicking and screaming, LOL.

Do you have a sunbonnet pattern? You know, I know I have seen one that sort of twists and fits in its own pouch, but I cant for the life of me remember where. Anyone know?

Ok, did some poking around and found a nice straw hat with a wide brim at smoke and fire http://www.smoke-fire.com/ for about $3.50 but freight is $6 up to $30 in merchandise. Oh darn. I will have to do more shopping :D I'm thinking a nice sandalwood fan and maybe a paper parasol or maybe some books... I'm still interested in a pattern though if any one knows where I can find one. :)

Try any of these:
-- Halloween costume sections in pattern books like Simplicity, Butterick, etc. in a fabric store or store that sells fabric
--classified ad section in back of issue of magazines like Countryside, Backwoods, Backwoods Home, Mother Earth News (key words beside pattern/costume are Amish/Mennonite clothing(Most of these mags have websites)
--other reenactor costume sites, theatrical supply/costume company in big city
--if you had more time, possibly the used pattern sections in thriftstores (often in drawers labelled yarn, sewing, patterns)

I am all for a good bargain too, it just seems that 'cheap' and 'inexpensive'are two different terms nowadays. I found a lady's gardening hat with a 4" brim, chin strap, and toggle bead to secure the strap on the Monticello website under "gifts for gardeners." Price is $25, but made of braided palm strands. Oh, and because Thomas Jefferson loved to garden, Monticello has trees and seeds for sale that come from the same things he grew. Of course, I didn't look at seeds or anything... ;)

I bet you can find one this month. But it will probably be pointy and black.
