Hello All,
Seems like I read something a while back, that there is a herb you can mix in your dog food that will help prevent fleas and ticks from getting on them.

I guess the way it works,is that after digestation it gives off a scent in the skin that the fleas and ticks dont like. I cant remember which herb it was, are the amount, and how often to give it.
Does anyone have any experince, are know anything about this? Thanks

A sprinkling of garlic and Brewer's yeast once a day. My last dog would eat it with no problem and he very rarely had fleas or ticks. The dog I have now needs to be bribed with a few leftovers.

I am going to bathe him today with some peppermint soap. I've read that might help too. It can't hurt and the fleas are really bad here this year.

I agree with flowerpower, garlic poweder and brewers' yeast is great. NaturVet sells different sizes of this already mixed and dosage is weight-based. It also reads: "During stress, convalescing, pregnancy, or in summer months, double the daily amount." So, a 21-30 lb dog would normally get 1 teaspoon per day, but 2 teaspoons per day right now. You can also use this to control fleas and ticks cats.

For those people that say you need research to prove it, I feel that life experience and personal results also speak volumes. I didn't use anything else besides this on my dog last year and he had no fleas or ticks.

Pennyroyal is a great repellent. But it's used externally, not as part of their food. You can make a nosegay out of it, or just weave some around their collars.

Lavender is also a flea repellent - I add oil to the dog's bath, which I make by infusing mineral oil with dried flowers. Also, you can put dried flowers in the dog's bedding, or on the throw rugs before you vacuum. It makes the lab smell kind of girly, but his coat is great, and no fleas.

But then my hounds would get the crap beat outta them by the other animals if they walked around with flowers woven in their collars.<grin>

:D Well Cliff I think what you should do is mix a lot!! of fresh garlic cloves into their food , maybe their breath will keep the other animals at a safe distance. Mobi :)

don't give them too much garlic as it is poisionus in large doses their liver and kidney can't break it down just like onions the build up can cause a wide variety of problems i lost a cocker by letting her eat garlic and onions from time to time cost 700 for vet to tell me i killed her by giving too much over the 5 years we had her.
