View Full Version : Broccoli-eating critter?

Something ate an entire head of broccoli right off of the plant last night. Any ideas what it could be? With all of the nice, fresh lettuce and other goodies available, I'm just shocked that something would eat broccoli!

lots of bugs eat broccoli, but it could have been a four footed friend, too. do any of the other heads look bug-munched? were the leaves eaten, or just the actual head?

Nope, not bugs...something 4-footed for sure. Someone on another forum said groundhogs, rabbits and deer would eat them. Something ate the leaves a couple of weeks ago (didn't bother them at all when they were young and tender!) and left stalks with broccoli heads on them. Last night, I guess they decided to finish their meal. How very odd.

yep, rabbits were my first guess - cute, fuzzy little veggie thieves! deer don't touch mine, but we are on constant rabbit patrol - they seem to know that we'll be picking it soon, and make every effort to clear us out of tender bunches! they bypass the cauliflower for them, the little punks!

Violence is the only thing those furry, terroristic little %#^%#&^ understand! <grin>

Oh, violence is my husband's first choice, too, but then what to do with the carcasses before the kids see them? (they name the !#$@*# things!) chicken wire does seem to thwart them temporarily, and sending the dog out to chase them works too. Our cat has taken to hiding in the squash, and has tagged a couple rabbits, but then she doesn't really know what to do with them, and lets them go.... maybe if we withhold the kitty chow for a couple days.... hmmmm

Just tell him to skin 'em, soak 'em in salt water for a while, and then cook 'em up in the crock pot with some veggies. Hopefully, your hubby is better at removing the bullets than my dad is/was. I always HATED biting into those little hard pellets!

ha ha ha ha! I was switching between my soccer buddy IM and this forum, and just as he asked what should be done about the US team, I saw your answer re: rabbits! I passed it on, and hopefully Homeland Security won't be knocking down my door soon. Anyway, the rabbits we have are mutant dwarf sized broccoli munchers - my hubby says they're not even worth stewing.

I was going to say that.
Just get rid of that fur stuff and you'll find rabbits are made of meat.
PS: Use a .22 instead of a shotgun to avoid those nasty little pellets.
Besides, using a shot gun for rabbit or squirrel is cheatin'. <grin>
