For those who might be interested- the festival site is very close to Yasgur's Farm where the original Woodstock took place.

Oh Geez, don't tell me that...I still have two copies of the original soundtrack.............
But no, I can't attend the Saugerties Festival. Have a previous commitment to show that weekend that I simply cannot pass up.
Why is it that all of the hobbies that mean the most to me conflict when it comes down to being able to attend fun-ctions??

At least 2 1/2 hrs. It's in Kingston - I believe that is exit 20 on the Thruway. And you have to wait 45 min for parking at the site. The place is packed. Charlie, if you want garlic, let me know. I'll send you some cloves in the fall.

Every year I have to decide b/t HVGF or a wildlife fest that is only 15 min from me (and free). They are always on the same days. And some years I have to work at the wild. fest. Plus I have this obsession with petting animals. I try to pet everything. I went to Ring Bros circus last month and I made kids move so I could pet the elephant. lol They were too scared.

Hi everyone-
I live here in Saugerties and have been going to the festival every year except the last 2. It was fun until the rest of the entire world decided to join in the traffic. Now on that weekend I stay as far away from the village as possible. Parking is so far away that you have to be shuttled by bus. I would rather exchange on here or buy my garlic then deal with 50,000 garlic crazed people. JUST my opinion. The festival is a great opportunity to experience lots of garlic and try a few that you might like to grow but you have to fight off the crowds.

For those of you who attend, bring home the ingredients to make this great Garlic Soup. For those who stay home, make this soup to remind youself you are not at the Garlic Festival!
Gary/Louisville

Rendezvous Garlic Soup
You will spend the night alone if you don't share it with your significant other.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup finely chopped garlic (2 large bulbs)
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2or3 tablespoons rue
3 14 1/2 oz cans chicken broth
1 pint half and half

This goes real fast so have everything ready before you start.

Make the rue first.
In a small saute pan melt 2 tablespoons butter and add 2 tablespoons flour. Stir until color becomes a "paper bag" brown. Set aside.

In a 3 quart saucepan heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the garlic and stir constantly until it is golden brown. Add nutmeg, white pepper, sugar and salt. Stir about 30 seconds until sugar starts to melt. Add rue and stir until mixed well. Slowly add the chicken broth while constantly stiring to prevent lumps from forming. (At this point I sometimes use a stick blender to obtain a finer texture) Reduce heat to medium low and add the half and half. Stir ocassionally unit soup is heated to serving temperature.

Serve in soup mugs garnished with garlic chives and warm sourdough baguette slices.
For the true garlic aficionado this soup opens a portal to culinary heaven! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

There's a Garlic festival less than an hour from my place that I have attended in the past. I forgot all about it this year until I saw the revival of this post... :(

Hey flowerpower-
Thanks for the other garlic festival listings. With 2 young lassies in tow I can barely manage the store let alone a crowd so I will certainly check these 2 out. Is the Milford one on the NJ/Pa/NY border? I think I've been in Milford and its a great town.
Can anyone suggest an all time favorite garlic for zone 5 that I must grow this year. I am not very familiar with varieties other then the standard elephant, music and german. Is anyone doing an exchange on garlic?

Thanks-
lisa

FlowerPower-
Me again. Just checked out the link to Sharon Springs- I just drove through there on my way back from Boonville(outside of Utica) where my dad has a camp. What a gorgeous gorgeous drive that was. We have been so lucky with the blue skies and low humidity these last weeks. I was actually thinking of taking another drive up there just for the heck of it- saw an Antique vendor I wanted to check out and Hubby wants to ofcourse hit the baseball hall of fame. I said maybe we should also hit the Herkimer Diamond mines and do alittle sloshing with the kids. Sorry I'm off the subject here but I just wanted to say thanks again for the link.

Lisa, the town of Milford is 8 mi south of Cooperstown. The fest is being held right on Rte 28.

I have mostly German white and red. I am sure there are a few Music out there. Last year I bought a Russian White, but now I have no idea which one it is. lol This year I am looking for maybe an Italian Purple Stripe to try. And I suppose whatever else catches my attention. lol
