Hoping I can re-pot my tomatoes before I kill them.

Right now I'm appreciating these May Day rains--unseasonal but greatly welcomed nonetheless! Our Sierra snow pack, which provides the majority of California's summer water, is only at 2/3 of normal right now

Re: What are you all doing for your gardens right now???

Ok, I made it to Lowe's and as a result I:

Planted two large pots (glazed stoneware) with basil as the centerpiece and petunias and something I've never seen before all around. Can't remember the name of the other flower and it's outside in the dark so...

I also transplanted the chard into the raised bed, where hopefully it will be happier. I transplanted my lupin seedlings, and got a nice look at why you aren't supposed to grow them inside. I'll know better next time. I made another big container of amended soil to use in pots, and I moved my lime tree so it won't get whacked every time I use the hose.

Tomorrow I'll plant one more planter (or maybe two), re-pot the little fern I bought for my desk, and pull some more weeds.

I finally get to reply to this thread. We are planting and sowing today. Planting broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions sets and sowing peas, spinach, carrots, kale and a variety of lettuces. YEAH!!!

Put poles in for the pole beans, caged the tomatoes (need two more cages) And need to get some cages or frames for the bush eggplant.

Re: What are you all doing for your gardens right now???

Since I last wrote not much has gotten done because of the ongoing rain. DH and I need to build the trellis so we can get the tomatoes, tomatillos, and other seedlings into the ground around it, and the peppers into the ground between the trellis parts (harvested crape myrtles) and where the trellis goes. I think that makes sense. Can't afford to stomp them so wait till their soon-to-be-home is not a construction zone.
Pulled weeds in the yard so that DH doesn't need to mow as often. Weeded the okra again. Put down straw in the part of the path/moat around the first (and biggest) raised bed. Need to dig out more on the west end but may move on this year and even things out in the slack season (whenever that turns out to be).
Got out the graph paper and plotted everything done so far, and another plot of everything planned for eventually. (This year's bed layout is not permanent, but it is necessary until we get that last damaged tree down.)

What did you plant in your shade garden? Always looking for new ideas for my extensive shade...

Today my husband laid drip irrigation for me in the veggie garden, hooray! Also I transplanted to permanent & pretty pots a orange tree, a lemon tree, and a kaffir lime, planted loquat seeds, planted a bunch more annuals and a few perennials in the new ornamental bed, fed everything everywhere, transplanted my tomatoes still under the grow lights (for later in the season), did some pruning, tried to tame the honeysuckle and jasmine in my daughter's garden that was getting out of control with some new trellises, and spent far too much time at the local nursery contemplating pineapple guavas. :)

I had to replace my simple garden fence that was about 3" tall because my dog decided she was going to jump it. Luckily we found A LOT of picket fence in the trash. So to make a long story short. My garden area has a picket fence now. I plan on taking pictures soon.

It wasn't the best looking fence in the world but I think I might pain it tonight.

I'm celebrating! Yay! The lilies-of-the-valley that I transplanted from my mom's garden before she moved, which originally came from my great-grandmother's garden, are sprouting! They only had two leaves last year, and I didn't know if they would come back this year. Woohoo!

Since it has been raining for a week here in southern Missouri I am trying to figure out how to mount a set of pontoons on my tiller so I can float it across the garden, or maybe I better just hope for a few days of sun and dry conditions.

Hubs and I staked tomatoes yesterday, and as of 7 pm 5/3, we had 17 cherry tomatoes, 5 Romas, and ~10 Cherokee Purples set. I'm so excited! Sadly, though, the lettuce has all through and through bolted, so it's all getting pulled this weekend.

Re: What are you all doing for your gardens right now???

Yesterday I dug a 30 foot trench and planted potatoes, transplanted the two pea plants that came up from our early planting experiment and tilled a section that I'll try to get raked out today. I also had some onions in my pantry that grew stems, so I stuck those in the ground to see what they'd do. I tossed a slew of seeds in pots and such to get started on some herbs, onions and leeks, a few more tomatoes and such.
I've got that nice ache in my shoulders that reminds me what this body was made for. ;)

Thats funny I just offered Klorentz to borrow mine on another thread. I already used it. I'll loan it out for seeds. Klorentz never said if he wanted to use it or not!

Must pick up. No deliveries! Must bring people to pick it up!

Re: What are you all doing for your gardens right now???

Not much getting done b/c of rain...ground gets dry enough to till and we are wetted again...and I am thankful for every little drop we get! Our reservoir was 28 feet below pond last year around October. You could see old bridges from the days before the impoundment! Now we are only 4-5 feet below pond and that is dangerous. The ground has dried out so very quickly between rains.
Now it is a nice, soft steady soaking rain. Not too bad. (Got caught in a thunderstorm on the Harley Saturday. 30 miles of rain that felt like bullets hitting you!)

I noted that my mater sets have just really grown a lot in the past week. The reseeds I did for what did not make it from early seeding are just catching right on up. When it does dry out we can just stick it all right in the ground! Something is eating my pepper plant leaves. Shooting them full of holes! DE to the rescue! All my different basils are sprouting good!

Also, I noted that in my newest bed, which is mostly ground up leaves mixed with clay earth...the arugula and lettuces have pretty much bolted. But in the beds filled with Fafard dirt, they are still microgreen size. Hmmmm..... Any thoughts????

The artichoke is growing slowly but surely. No chokes this year I bet, but it will look pretty neat at any rate!

Wheat stand has headed really good! Couple more months till harvest!

hikingonthru -- If you tasted the microgreens, chances are that they're bitter as all get-out. I had that same issue with my greens that got "under-fed"...

Well this past weekend I watered all my plants, made new concrete wire cages for the cucumbers and placed same, counted all the green cherry tomatoes on the Isis Candy, and tried to persuade the kiwano to stay in it's own cage instead of muscling in on the adjoining cages.

What are you feeding all your tomato plants? I feel lucky to have blooms on half of mine. :-P

My garden-sown cucumbers, luffa, and bush beans all came up today. The kentucky wonders that I planted a few weeks ago are also coming up. One of my bush zucchini plants is yellowing and seems to be unhappy, but I can't tell why. The other one on the far side of the same bed is happy and putting out new leaves like they're going out of style.

Put some fish emulsion pellets at the base of all your plants when blooming. And water, water, water. ;)

Re: What are you all doing for your gardens right now???

Moved the strawberry bed out of the soon-to-be tomato bed yesterday. It turned itself into three beds. :) Added 7 gallons of coffee grounds to that tomato bed, double-dug those in, along with last fall's chopped up leaf mulch. Planted two rows of carrots down the length of that tomato bed. Trying to interplant tomatoes with carrots this year in hopes of maximizing space & planting friends nearby. Basil will go in there, too.

Put eggshells around the hostas. Considering my dad's method of setting out a small cup of beer for the slugs to take their Long Swim.

Deciding how to protect my broccoli & Brussels sprouts from whatever has been munching their leaves off. Looks rabbit-ish in the way it's the entire outer edges of the lower leaves that are missing. Probably will start with some tulle over them, and move to fencing if the creatures aren't that lazy.

Preparing to move sod so the pole beans can go in the ground. The beans & peas in containers only have one sprout up after two weeks, but my "helper" may have planted them about 6 inches under when I wasn't watching. It may take them a while to find daylight.

It is through entirely no fault of mine. I got the "designer dirt" at the local landscape center, and it must have some sort of meth or crack or steroids in it. If today's horrendous weather doesn't do much damage, I should have ripe cherry tomatoes by the end of the week.
