I've had a terrible year too. My cucumber plants were destroyed by cucumber beetles this year. This is the first year I've barely gotten a thing.
![]() My tomato plants didn't produce much either. I think it was heat stress. And my lettuce barely germinately only to be squashed by squirrels. Not a great year indeed. |

last year I got a few tomaotoes. This year I watered several times . Even with the heat I got a ton of tomatoes popping up. I used Fish emulsion three times. I dont think I even watered rercently. It does make a difference where you plant them. . I am going to grow out my heirlooms next year

UGH! I have had the same problems with my cukes and zukes! So disappointed...cucumber beetle wiped out my entire crop and I got 2 zukes for the season. I just took everything out. Butternut squash was looking fantastic-but just discovered the flea beetles. Those little buggers just did a number on my crop! I still have about 9-10 butternut squash which are maturing, but I am afraid they may not ripen or will be ruined.
tomatoes had a rough year, got about 10...but took a long time. First time gardener...looking forward to next year! Working on Fall garden now: Can I plant different types of lettuce in one area or will I have a problem with cross pollination? want to plant-chard, iceberg, spinach and cabbage. Also, any suggestions for planting carrots in the fall? |

SESE has a good fall & winter planting guide that might be helpful. They are in central VA, zone 6b. http://www.southernexposure.com/sout...de-ezp-38.html

It's all up to September here-- will it get cool enough to set tomatoes and the rest of it, or stay relentlessly hot? 104 degrees today would keep most mold away...
Well, a late freeze wouldn't hurt either. Tree leaves are already turning, so I don't think nature is sure of itself at this point.

I'm about ready to call it quits for the year. But the plans I'm making for next year!
More tomatoes, more basil, potatoes for the first time, I'll try corn again, more eggplant, but no white ones, more cukes, no cabbage, no brussel sprouts, more kale, no pole beans, more yellow bush beans, less yellow squash, lots and lots of Jimmy Nardella peppers............and NO scotch bonnets peppers! Better garlic and more onions. That about sums it up. |
