I decided to start these forums so gardeners would have a free place to discuss heirloom gardening, gene-altered food, seed saving, natural politics and products. We are dedicated to saving our food and horticultural heritage, and hope you enjoy this forum for the free-thinking gardener! Wishing you great gardening, Jere Gettle |

Hi, everybody. I'm new to gardening. I really want to grow more of my own food and have spent the summer experimenting. I had some successes and some failures and I'm really looking forward to expanding my garden this fall. Wish me luck.
Thanks |

I am an executive from New York and whenever I have time I dig my small garden for growing some veggies and flowers over there. I really love gardening. Glad to be among you. I to ask about the the type of veggies I should grow during winter season. Any assistance would be appreciated. thanks ![]() visit here Last edited by Pabloren; October 18th, 2012 at 09:30 PM.. |

Hey, folks. I just joined up. I returned to gardening this year after a long hiatus. I live and grew up in SW VA. My family goes back several generation in the area mostly as subsistence farmers. I even thought about that venue as a young man. My most prior passion has been trail-running, but some foot problems have curtailed that somewhat and I've been filling in that time and more in establishing some garden space. Last year, my wife and I made a very tasty 5-gallon run of apple cider, so last February I set out 5 pear trees and 12 apple trees. Next, I built 2 - 4' x 25' asparagus beds -I'd never grown it before. Then I set out 2 dz each of red and black raspberries. I've turned under 2 crops of buckwheat, with a third coming on, in a 30 x 90 plot. I've almost finished canning and drying with about 3 dz paste tomatoes plants for the year, and have fall plantings of snow peas, pak choi, carrots, cabbage, kale, winter scallions, turnips, lettuce and cilantro. With another lady, I've also helped work to re-establish a friend's garden because of illness in their family. Next year I'm thinking about adding bees. I had a couple of stands back in the 80's and enjoyed that. So, even without running much, I've been able to spent a lot of time outdoors this year.

Hi, I'm Stacey. My husband, Lance, and I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We bought 20-acre parcel of land out in the boonies 8 years ago and we have been building up to being self-sufficient organically. I'm the main gardener and he's the main animal caregiver. We also both still work so we're always looking for time-saving methods in order to achieve our goals. We have a 72X50ft garden, about 30 free-range laying hens, pet rabbits (we do not eat rabbits but they are wonderful little fertilizer factories!), guinea hens, and we raise and process 100-150 meat chickens per year for ourselves and family.
