I grow corn each year, but haven't tried growing popcorn yet. Having noticed that our family probably consumes more popcorn than any other type of corn, I've decided to grow popcorn this year.
I'm particularly interested in growing heirloom popcorn that's 6 ft or over in height, good tasting, and maybe multi-colored. Any recommendations? |

Neither of the two popcorns we offer is that tall. You might try Seeds of Change or Seed Savers.

Hey Bear; What you are looking for is Kauders,Popwhite and Cochita Pueblo.SSE or Sandhill Preservation has these.Thee really tall Var.s pop larger and taste more like modern Hybrids. There are more Var.s but this will get you in the right direction. Also Native Seed/Search.

Zebraman- Thanks... this looks like what I'm looking for. I did some searching around the net, and also came across a variety called "Wilda's Pride", a multicolored Native popcorn. If anyone has tried this one, or has tried the ones Zebraman mentioned, let me know.

Yeah, I know, this thread is half a year old, but I'm really interested! I have been growing Cherokee Long Ear popcorn for about four years now, and I'm worried that I need some fresh genes for the pool. Anybody else in the same boat? I haven't seen it offered in awhile...
By the way, CLE popcorn is multi colored, but the plants have not topped six feet until this year - probably due to better soil, though I'd like to think it's my selection practices. The popped kernels are kind of small, but the flavor is good. |
