Does anyone plant by the moon-waxing waning? I have done this haphaserdly sometimes I do sometimes I don't.
If it falls at the wrong time to plant root crops which I beleive it is right now (?) and I plant my leek seeds (getting a little bit of a late start I know on this- this is my first year attempting to start my own from seed) My mother told me they would be all greens and no roots if I plant them now- but the "moon sign guide" I picked up at our local garden center has March 22 as the nearest date to plant root crops And that is getting really late??? Is it waxing or waning moon for root crops??? My mother also said she was not so sure that this guide has the right dates anyway??? Can anyone help me on this one???? Thanks! |

I don't know if I'm just fooling myself but I like to plant above ground crops on the full moon, and below ground crops on the dark of the moon.
I know it works on haircuts.

Planting by the moon does not just relate to the phases of the moon. It also depends on which zodiac sign the moon appears to pass through (eg. Pisces, Aries etc...). Each year the dates change for planting, so you cannot go by the dates in last year's almanac.

Here is a handy-dandy online almanac with what to do on various days!
http://www.blumsalmanac.com/contentd...Type=gardening Last year I had a wonderful calendar that listed the moon phase and gardening phase for each day. But calendars come and go. Web pages last forever (at least, longer than a year.)

I don't know why I'm attracted to this moon phase stuff, but I am. Am I just superstitious by nature? Have a need for guidance and put my faith in balogna? Maybe so, but I do.
But then you get hangups, like ... suppose your order of fruit trees arrives on a day you're not supposed to plant anything? If I can plant within about two days, I wait. Put the bareroot trees in water and go dig holes. Lots of people believe in this stuff. So who am I to go against 'em? And you sit around waiting for the right days to plant stuff or prune or whatever. Including seeds. But you don't have to wait too long, usually. Kind of hard on people who only garden on weekends!! But ... it just FEELS right. And like many gardeners, you have FEELINGS that it's time to plant! you go out there and see and feel ... springtime and little sprouts and shoots coming up ... and it's raining or just about to rain or just has rained ... and you just get that FEELING ... plant ... NOW! So you go check your almanac or calendar and ... get the go-ahead or the 'wait.' Mostly, I let the almanac tell me what to do. But sometimes I'm sacreligious.

Neat link, TOH. It's even updated. With easy info at my fingertips like that, I'm more likely to try it. Otherwise, I go by the weather.

just my two cents worth, but my dear old Dad and Granddad always planted by the moon signs, always had good harvests. I am continuing the tradition, and hopefully the good harvests.
