There is a nesting pair of Pileated woodpeckers nesting in the tree right across the street from me! Right behind my mailbox! Whoo Hooo! I spent many days watching them in the park and couldn't get very close at all and these two are less than 20 feet above my head here and they don't even seem to care that I am there! They just both looked at me and then went about their business... I so hope that they raise some babies there and that the tree(which is mostly dead) won't come down this summer or my neighbor doesn't decide to cut it down.... I am so gonna have to tell him how cool it is to have them nest there.. Plus I could hear another couple a few houses down in another tree, cuz I could see both of the pair here.. Now to figure out how to make my neighborhood more attractive to wood thrushes...

Neat. I've only actually seen them once in my life, in the woods at Kensington Metropark in Milford. They are certainly large and impressive. I can only imagine how awesome the Ivory Billed must (may?) have been, considering they were (are?) even larger.
My sister up in the Manistee National Forest says they are quite common up there (the pileateds, not the Ivory Bills!)

That is great! Once in a while we see them around here, but haven't gotten to see any nests. Hopefully your neighbors understand and let the tree stand. Hopefully you can post some photos.

We have pileated, downy, and red bellied. When they are doing the mating tapping, it sounds like a nail gun expo around here! The downies and red bellies are common sights, but we rarely have more than on pair of pileated a season.

I love woodpeckers. We have a Downy that comes every morning and every evening and pecks away at the Sweet Gum tree. We have other varities, too. When the Downy and the Pileated come together at the same tree, it's like Mutt and Jeff. Really fun to watch.
Em, wish we could get some woodpecker babies. We have a Mama house wren who's raising babies in our porch fern and a mockingbird raising babies in an old satellit tv dish. The mockingbird nest is right by the swing where we like to sit in the evenings. If we are too loud or move around too much, the Mama mockingbird scold us.

we have pileated that come to the suet. they dont come daily or sometimes even weekly but then they will come for several days at a time. I have not discovered where they nest but feel its very near. Woodpeckers are probably my favorites, along with the frosbeaks.

We have Downy, Hairy, Red Headed, and both types of flickers around here routinely at various timesof the year. Once in a while, I see a red bellied woodpecker, mostly in the winter.
